Rise of the favorite: Hürrem Sultan Hürrem’s career as a royal consort (from the birth of her first son in 1521 to her death in 1566 broke with three principal features of earlier tradition: the reproductive principle of one mother-one son Hürrem had four sons Mehmed born in 1521, died from small pox. Abdullah born in 1523, died three years after his birth Selim born in 1524 Bayezid born in 1525 Cihangir born in 1531, a hunchback. as well as Mihrimah-Süleyman’s only surviving daughter born in 1522 the concubine status of royal mothers Sultan Süleyman married Hürrem the presence of a prince’s mother at her son’s provincial post and in the old palace in Bayezıd Hürrem moved to the Topkapı and stayed in Istanbul and became a political confidante to the Sultan
