Timeline

Timeline of the Novel 1993-sierra leone Ishmael mattru jong where he lives, to a different town dance and rap talent show-junior brother, friends Rebels call themselves freedom fighters, RUF rebels attack Ishmaels hometown Family and everyone he knows is separated Rebels are spreading across sierra Leone, killing ppl taking hostages Waiting for news from their family Priority 1– survival Try to go back home, who do they find? The rebels Boys get separated Ishmael is alone for awhile

Timeline Ishmael is alone, in the jungle/the bush Difficult because, confusion, fearful for his family, running out of food, animals. Fearful for his own life he is isolated. Meets up with friends, moving, on the run, looking for food, encounter rebels He hears that his family is safe in a nearby village Doesn’t make it to see his family, the rebels attack that village\ Sad, angry Recruited by government soldiers Brainwashed by drugs, teach them about revenge, movies-\Rambo Is killing easy in the beginning> no Changing moment for Ishmael is when 6 years old friend is killed by rebels

Timeline He is angry, killing becomes easy, drugs big part of his life, not thinking clearly 3 years in the war Rebels, are close to his age, well dressed, a lot of bling UNICEF picks up Ishmael, bring him to rehab Withdrawl (no drugs) Not happy, angry, acting out (punching, hurting people, burns school supplies and then he moves to selling them, fights with other boys and staff members) Esther, nurse, she cares for him, like his therapist, Walkman cassetrs, rap (run dmc)music and reggae (bob marley) Starts to trust again, gaining a childhood, Goes to see the city- Freetown- interesting because he has never seen them before, new experience for him

Timeline Leslie-social worker- get him out of rehab, to find him a family, , finds his uncle who takes him in He lives with his uncle in freetown, with his family Opportunity to represent child soldiers at the united nations in new York Goes to new York talks about child soldiers, meets a woman helps him to better tell his story, she cares about him, offers her help gives him her contact info. Back home in freetown the rebels attack again, separated from his family, they are killed, he escapes to Guinea neighboring country He gets to new York storyteller woman adopts him. Goes to highschool and college.
