To wear the crown, you should be able to stand its weight To wear the crown, you should be able to stand its weight. As a leader, you should undertake your corresponding duties and manage yourself well. There are many of your subordinates keeping a watchful eye on what you are doing. Please sweep your own door and conduct yourself well before you make your orders work. Once you do well, you may exert your influence on the others to act properly. Finally you will succeed in being a respected leader. One day, when you become a manager, you will stay at a position full of challenges which is an inspection standard to confirm whether you are capable of a leader. You are already a manager but may not succeed to become a leader.

Management is based on legal, rewarding and coercive power Management is based on legal, rewarding and coercive power. However, the leadership is more established on the base of the personal influence power, expert power and model role. Firstly, the leaders must have subordinates or followers. Secondly, the leaders should have the power attracting their followers. Furthermore, the purpose of leadership is to have company’s goal achieved by affecting subordinates’ acts. Therefore, one person may be qualified both as a manager and leader. But it does not indicate all managers will become leaders. A qualified manager realizes the company’s goal by exerting his/her leadership. In contrast, unqualified one does it by management.

In fact, for those competent managers, nobody can be managed but only themselves. In spite of their authority in hand, managers could only influence the others to act properly by exerting his/her personal influence power and expert power. That is a qualified leader who can accomplish managing himself/herself with influence on the others. In conclusion, managers should have some basic competence or standard of behavior with the core of which is that leader’s success is relied on the success of those who are led. Normally, there are two ways for employees going towards the management posts. One is for those who have special professional skills being entrusted with management duties meanwhile. The second is for those who show artistic ability and charm on their management. Certainly, there are talents who have some combinations of both which are rarely seen.

The capacities possessed by an excellent manager are as below, 1、 Improving your team’s competence Once an employee comes to a management position, particularly a key management position, his/her success is to develop his/her subordinates’ abilities instead of developing him/herself. In another word, a leader should constantly discover and develop one’s ability in maximum when he/she exercises his/her leadership. That is the process of team’s competence improvement. As a manager, what you should do is to make your staff more powerful on their competence and more cooperative rather than to make yourself strong.

2、Behaving upright to earn other people’s trust As a manager, firstly you should have integrity to establish your trust of the others by virtue of your spirit of frank, transparency and reputation. Your trust will appear when you practice what you preach. As your subordinates, they should always know what their performance is and how progressive their business is. As a leader of them, you must conquer your own instinct to avoid covering or glossing over awful information. Otherwise, you will lose the trust and energy of your team.

3、Knowing the fun of the work A happy employee provides the relative high-quality services. Thus, please make your employees feel the fun of the work without imposing any pressure nothing with the work on them. Otherwise, they are busy to deal with those irrelevant cases.

4、letting your employees have dream New employees always have their own visions which are conflicted with company’s vision sometimes. It is utterly wrong to deny or reject them. What you should do is to make a developing plan for your employees managing to combine the company’s visions and theirs into one with guidance of them to the development track of the company. Even though you cannot do so, you already built a resource for your company or employees. For the reason of this, whether it is now or future, the current or former employees as well as our customers are all our resources.

5、 Learning to share your work achievements When you become a leader, sometimes inevitably you might have the impulse of saying ‘please look at my work achievements’. While your team shows outstanding performance, you want to attribute the success to yourself. For a leader, it does not mean you are awarded with a crown but with a duty, that is, to release other people’s best potential. As leaders, if you want to earn the trust of your employees, it will be better for you to keep fair in meting out rewards and punishments and make yourself an example for the others. You never seize the achievement of your subordinates and steal their good ideas as your own. Keeping enough self-confidence and intellect without fawning upon your superiors and insulting your subordinates, you will be recognized sooner or later just because of your teams’ achievements.

6、Acting as a good listener and daring to admit mistakes As an administrator, you have to maintain your authority. However, you may not make the independent decisions each time. Sometimes you are required to listen to your subordinates. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one. As the saying goes, nobody is perfect. It is not strange for managers to make mistakes as they are not saints. However, please do not cover your mistakes just for maintaining your authority. It only makes you behave more stupid.

7、Facing up to the relative views and advices Discovering the problem is half success of the solution. Each of us likes to facing up the positive views but always with hostile attitude to the negative one. As a manager, you would better to listen and face up the problems some of which will be transferred into positive views and advices once you make the clarifications and explanations. Finally, I want to use following words again as our mutual encouragement with those whom expect to be a manager or will be a manager, ‘ Managers should manage himself/herself to influence the others’.
