Chinese Calligraphy Chinese calligraphy is a form of writing that has been mostly used in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. In Chinese calligraphy, you use a paint brush and ink. You really should NEVER use a pen when you do calligraphy!

How They Do It To do Chinese calligraphy you need a paint brush and black ink. It is suppose to be very relaxing when you do it. when you do it, you should make light strokes instead of very hard strokes that kill the paper!

What It Is Chinese calligraphy is considered an art form by the Chinese. One symbol equals one word. Chinese calligraphy is mostly done on scrolls, signs, letters, and even just writing paper at school.

How Many There Are There are more then 20,000 Calligraphy characters. Most Chinese kids learn Calligraphy at the age of six. They do this so early because they have so many words to learn. They also have so many letters. We have 24 letters in our alphabet and Chinese people have 200 letters.

Chinese Languages There are more then two Chinese Languages. Some languages are Hunyu, Mandarin, and Zhongwen. Each Language has a different way of writing. Also They speak differently. Most Chinese people speak Mandarin.

Brush Brushes used to be made with animal hair such as weasel, badger, goat and rabbit with handles made of bamboo. Some people make brushes with baby hair.

Ink Stick The ink stick is a form of artificial ink used in calligraphy. A picture of an ink stick made in the form of a lotus leaf and flowers.

Ink Stone The ink stone is used to grind the ink stick into powder, which is then mixed with water in the depression of the ink stone. This method of making ink allows the artist or writer to control the ink-to-water ratio used.

Paper Before the invention of paper, bamboo slips and silk were used as writing material. Paper is one of the most important inventions from China that we still use to this day, although the formation of our paper differs from that of ancient paper.
