What is stress The body’s response to changes around you. Physical Emotional Social It is a natural part of life that we need to learn to deal with by developing healthy coping skills.

Types of stress Helps you accomplish tasks and reach goals Helps you escape danger Essential for proper body functioning Distress- Agony, grief, misery, ache, upset, trouble, danger, worry Too much negative stress can be unhealthy. Positive Negative

Reactions to types of stress Feel alert and focused Feel excited and challenged Ex. Playing on a sports team, avoiding an accident Feel angry, disappointed Frustrated Feel helpless and confused Ex. Arguing with a friend, feeling sick or hurt, doing poorly in school positive negative

How the body responds Stressors- anything that trigger stress. Objects, people, places, situations Different to each person.

Body’s physical response The brain is stimulated by a stressor Adrenaline is sent out through the body to prepare body to respond to stressor.

Body’s physical response The heart beats faster increasing blood flow to the brain and muscles. The muscles tighten becoming ready for action.

Body’s physical response Breathing becomes faster and deeper to take in more oxygen. Stomach and intestines slow down activity to save energy. Body returns to normal.

Journal entry Make a list of things that are stressors to you. Include situations that cause positive stress and negative stress. How do you cope with them? Are these coping mechanisms good or bad?

Stress and tiredness Fatigue- extreme tiredness. Occurs when a stressor is present for a prolonged period. Occurs when too many stressors occur at one time.

Types of fatigue Occurs after activity, results in sore, tired muscles. Solution is rest. Occurs from too much negative stress. Worry, sadness, boredom cause this type of fatigue. You must recognize this stress and develop good coping skills to manage it. physical emotional
