First Year Students What’s up with that??? A Presentation by KD Maynard for Franklin Pierce University 5/17/17

Time Travel . . . close your eyes, and think about What, in your first year out of high school (whether you were in college or not) absolutely CONSUMED your energy and attention?

Beloit College Annual Mindset list Class of 2020 Slideshow

Your observations . . . What do you see incoming Franklin Pierce first year students doing exceptionally well? What surprises you, that you think first year students should know/do, but they don’t? If you could cultivate three skills or habits in each first year student, what would they be? If you could eradicate or reframe three behaviors or assumptions of first year students, what would they be?

Discuss, and then we’ll report out

Before we get to my guesses, let’s look at yours As we look at some of the points raised - how you wish you could influence your first year students to help them be more successful - what strategies would you suggest to address the issues raised? Please identify the issue and briefly describe your recommended approach or resource to assist your students.

Topics for Exploration Time Management (urgent/important quadrants, per Steven Covey - spend most of your time on Important but Not Urgent) Bloom’s Taxonomy (you’re asked to do more than memorize in college!) Significant, Self- Directed Learning (Stephen Carroll and Dee Fink): metalearning and neurobiological principles Brain-based learning videos from McMaster University Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve, with lines for frequent review Principles of Memory - how does it work; what strategies are proven? Multi-tasking vs. code-switching (Dave Crenshaw)

STRESS and Anxiety Fears of risk-taking Perfectionism Indecision / paralysis Performance anxiety (fears of success AND failure) Impostor syndrome Give up, rather than ‘bucking up’

TED Talk with Angela Duckworth

Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset INTELLIGENCE IS STATIC Leads to a desire to look smart and therefore a tendency to… ...avoid challenges ...give up easily when faced with obstacles ...see effort as fruitless or worse ...ignore criticism or useful negative feedback ...feel threatened by the success of others INTELLIGENCE CAN BE DEVELOPED Leads to a desire to learn and therefore a tendency to… ...embrace challenges ...persist in the face of setbacks ...see effort as the path to mastery ...learn from criticism ...find lessons and inspiration in the success of others Source: https://infogr.am/fixed_mindset_vs_growth_mindset
