THE RADICAL

Team: 2 GUYS & A GIRL Will Bedford Janelle Dunn Randall Thomas

THE TASK: Materials: Tape Measure- $4 Wood -$6 Toy Car -$1 Glue -$1 Tape -$0.25 Nails -$0.25 Candle -$3.00 Rock -$0.50 Hook -$0.10 String -$0.10 Mouse Ball -$0.10 Cup -$0.10 Screw driver -$1 Popsicle Sticks-$0.25 Cardboard -$0.10 TOTAL= $17.75 Design and build a mechanical "motor" for a scale model of Estabrook's new elevator. Your motor should be capable of lifting a 1 kg mass to a height of 1 meter in 10 seconds. To allow you to demonstrate your creativity, we would like your motor to be as inefficient and complicated as possible - i.e. it will be a Rube-Goldberg device.

The Process: 3! 2! 1! GO!!! ENERGY! A mouse ball is placed on an angled piece of tape measure and steadily passes in a tape measure maze. After finishing the maze the ball falls into a cup on a hand crafted sea saw which lifts the other end of the sea saw. When the other end of the sea saw is lifted-it hits a screw driver which tip is under a small race car. The tip of the screw driver hits the car and triggers the car to speed down a ramp. As the car races down the ramp its velocity increases enough to knock a candle off the table. The candle is attached to the pulley and is able to lift the 1kg mass on the other end of the pulley in 10 seconds. Potential Energy PE=mgh Kinetic Energy KE=½mv² Energy loss

Construction & Conclusion Construction Issues & Solutions The mouse ball kept falling off maze: To solve this problem we added additional tape measure to each maze level and we added popsicle sticks as well as cardboard to keep from falling. The sea saw wouldn’t hit the car on the ramp: To solve this problem we changed from a sea saw hitting a pencil to a sea saw hitting a screw driver. The screw driver triggered a the car much better.
