2006 In January, President Bush announces he will send a "surge" of 20,000 more troops to Iraq in addition to the 130,000 already there. In Iraq, violence between different sects increases. The UN estimates that more than 34,000 Iraqi civilians are killed as a result of the fighting. There were also 300 U.S. soldiers killed in 2006. By the end of 2009 the total is up over 4,000. In November, Saddam Hussein is found guilty of crimes against humanity. He is hanged at the end of the year.
2007 Apple Computer releases the "iPhone.” In just over two months, 1 million iPhones are sold. 2008 The California State Supreme Court strikes down the state's ban on same-sex marriages as unconstitutional and the state becomes the second to allow gay marriage (after Massachusetts). However, in November voters pass a constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriages (Prop 8).
