PSOM Faculty Wellness Interventions

Dimensions of Faculty Wellness http://catalyst.nejm.org/physician-well-being-efficiency-wellness-resilience/ 4/26/17 Key: Promoting vitality and mitigating burnout requires an appreciation that there are 3 major dimensions of faculty wellness that reflect BOTH individual and institutional factors. High performing academic health care organizations will need to create a culture of wellness, efficient workplace and a tool kit to help support personal resilience. PSOM has adopted this framework and is building out each component.

Promote Culture of Wellness Created vision statement promoting the importance of culture: Engage faculty with innovative programs and space that maximize well being, enhance productivity and make Penn Medicine the preferred place to work. Appointed institutional Faculty Wellness Committee with broad representation. Engaged faculty in a crowdsourcing wellness campaign to identify top themes.

Top Themes from the Campaign Lactation support Faculty café/lounge Mind and body fitness programs Clinical navigator program Preorder grab and go meals Peer networking dinners Revise Faculty Policies

Lactation Support Implemented facility standard for space and equipment All new construction supports standard Currently addressing gaps after space and equipment inventory Revising policies to support young mothers Developing outreach program

Penn Medicine Commons A collaborative and interactive flexible space Conference rooms A self service café open from 7 am to 6 pm, M-F

Faculty Mind and Body Fitness Leveraging nearby University fitness programs and instructors to develop new client base. Faculty survey defined the parameters desired including: cardio, strength training, classes, personal training, yoga classes 6-9 am, 5-7 pm amenities desired: lockers, showers, stuff to get ready for work, laundry service, lockable baskets for storage, bike racks Recent pilot of fitness classes with free registration were very popular and fully subscribed.

Clinical Navigator Program Goal was to provide fast, seamless navigation for faculty to access healthcare for themselves or a family member. Launched in March 2017 as Penn Care Connects. Backend lives in our health system call center Faculty have a specific number to call. 45 calls in the first 6 weeks. Most common request was for primary care services. Recently added Pediatrics. Highest level of feedback for this service.

Dimensions of Faculty Wellness

Efficiency of Practice Goal: Promote life work integration for faculty by explicitly committing to reducing administrative burden and creating flexibility in the work environment. Reducing administrative burden pilots: for scientists: use of grant writers and manuscript reviewers, streamline research regulatory processes. for clinicians: optimize use of EHR with scribes etc Creating flexibility pilots: rewards and incentives to incorporate elements of self-care and well-being. Alternate clinic schedules that may start early or end in the evening.

Dimensions of Faculty Wellness

Personal Resilience Beta partner with Mayo Clinic on implementing the Physician Wellness Index at an AMC: validated, online, 9 question self-assessment tool that assesses multiple dimensions of distress. can be used to self monitor physician well-being and gauge the effectiveness of physician wellness programs. includes access to just-in-time local resources for physical, emotional, and mental health concerns. currently have about 600 active users. Other initiatives: Added workshops and seminars on resilience strategies Added mindfulness training Promoting awareness of existing university resources
