Closing the Student Success Gap between Online and Face To Face Classes at Ventura College

Education was calm like the West before Distance Education arrived.

Then DE became popular like the Gold Rush.

Stories were told / Myths were created. It is easier than Face to Face. You can finish whenever you want. The students will read the book and do the work. You don’t have to communicate with the students. Other Myths? (Please participate.)

People were needed. A Sheriff: Dr. Gwendolyn Lewis Huddleston, DEAN of DE Deputies: Sharon Oxford and Matt Moore, Instructional Technologists / Designers A Posse: A Hand Picked Distance Education Advisory Group Mayor: Andrea Horigan, Distance Education Co Chair Key Business Leaders: Philip Clinton, a Valued Faculty Member

We examined 2006 data and found . . . Few Classes No Wish list No Goals No Training No Definitions No Procedures Various Platforms No Standards No Evaluation And? (Please Participate.)

We started to build a Distance Education Community.

We began building by . . . (1) Pulling together hand picked people, Establishing Goals and Wish lists, Defining Roles, Agreeing upon Best Practices, Researching what works, Creating the Committee,

We began building by . . . (2) Seeking Administrative Buy In, Reaching out to the Academic Senate, Visiting Departments, Providing Handbooks, Training Faculty, And? (Please participate.)

A Town began to emerge that had . . . - Clashing Goals - Vague Process - A Focus on Teaching - FTE Focus - A Lack of Training - Bland Courses

We established best practices. Distance Education Advisory Committee Approved / Authored the DE Handbook Established Catalog Guidelines Created an Adoptive Course Rubric Supported a Certification Program Approved the Hiring of Additional Staff Recommended outside research and Conferences Process took a few years

Process, Documentation, and Information emerge. A Better DE Handbook that is updated yearly. Training and Professional Development Program defined. Instructional Designer Consultations. Vetting Process of Instructors /Quality Control. Policy Adoption such as Regular and Effective Contact. Peer to Peer Mentoring Web Site is clearly transparent and informative. Gaining Recognition throughout school community. Building the framework – Phillip

We became a civilized DE Community with big goals.
