Personal Statement = Personal Essay The personal essay is also one of the most popular forms of creative nonfiction. A personal essay can be based on a personal experience that results in a lesson that you learn. A personal essay can also be a personal opinion about a topic or issue that is important to you. Motivation Letter=Letter A cover letter, covering letter, motivation letter, motivational letter or a letter of motivation is a letter of introduction attached to, or accompanying another document such as a résumé or curriculum vitae. When it comes to motivation letters, they are usually used for non-job applications and there you can state your purpose but still keep some sense of personal motivation. Cover letters should be more related to professional and job applications, and they usually accompany your CV - by highlighting the most important job-related references.

There are some example personal statements on the internet that have been used by applicants, in some cases word for word. The service we use, called Copycatch, finds statements that show similarity, works out how much of the statement may have been copied, and reports the findings. What the Similarity Detection Service does. Each personal statement is checked against:  a library of personal statements previously submitted to UCAS  sample statements collected from a variety of websites  other sources including paper publications Each personal statement received at UCAS is added to the library of statements after it has been processed. What happens if a personal statement has similarities?  Any statements showing a level of similarity of 10% or more are reviewed by members of the UCAS Similarity Detection Service Team.  Applicants, universities and colleges are notified at the same time by email when an application has similarities confirmed.  Admissions tutors at individual universities and colleges decide what action, if any, to take regarding reported cases.

Notification that a report has been sent to the universities and colleges If Copycatch finds a significant level of similarity in your personal statement and the Verification staff at UCAS decide to inform the institutions you have applied to, we will let you know by email (if you have a verified email address). This email includes instructions on how you can view what Copycatch has found in Track, and gives you a link to frequently asked questions for further advice and guidance. The report sent to you is identical to the report sent to the institutions. It displays your personal statement marked up to identify sentences similar to others in the Copycatch system.

ВАЖНО Although you can apply for up to five courses via the UCAS form you only write ONE personal statement. Your statement can be up to 4,000 characters (around 700 words) or 47 lines of text (including spaces and blank lines), whichever comes first. You do not have to use all of the allocated space. You do not have to write your statement all at once. You can save and preview it as you go along. When you save your statement, you will be told how many characters are still available or if you have used too many. Use a formal tone, stay relevant and be positive As you have to pack all this information into a relatively short statement, it is essential to avoid the superfluous or, as I like to call it, the 'fluff'. If a sentence sounds pretty but doesn’t give the reader information, remove it. In addition, the tone should be formal and you should not use contractions, slang or jokes;  remember, the statement will be read by academics – often leaders in their field. Section 1: Why As already highlighted, the opening statement/sentence may well be one of your shortest, but it will certainly be one of the most important on your statement. You must demonstrate that you have thought thoroughly about the suitability of the course and that you understand what particular courses are offering. Show the admissions tutor that this is the course for you.

Create a clear structure to your work to enable the reader to easily follow your argument Explain why you want to dedicate yourself to the study of your chosen topic. Tutors want to know if you would be a valuable addition to their classroom. Show how you've pursued your interest outside the school/college syllabus Use examples from your own personal experiences to illustrate your skills. You may be asked about your examples if you are interviewed. Liaise with the teacher who is writing your reference so that your work compliments one another. Mention issues that you think an admissions tutor needs to take into consideration when assessing your application (e.g. long breaks from study, serious illness, or other major difficulties that may have affected your grades). Be original but not too quirky: You want to stand out for the right reasons!

Anti-plagiarism software goes through every UCAS application and universities will be alerted if plagiarism is suspected and have the right to reject your application. Refer to particular universities or courses by name as each tutor will think that your preferred option is theirs unless you indicate otherwise! Use overly gushy language. Be enthusiastic rather than sycophantic.

Further Mathematics has taught me how to analyse problems and to interpret information.
