Presentation transcript:

USING THE LIBRARY - Learning Intention Can I access the library resources effectively? Elicit responses all linked to using it to access learning across the whole curriculum. Can help you find books for homework. Can help you find books for pleasure. The staff can help you complete research? It has great databases that you can use? You can learn about referencing and plagiarism. There are lots of people and resources who can help you.

Success Criteria You can demonstrate that you can use the library databases - WebPath Express and World Book Online You can use the Destiny Library Search Engine You can complete the challenges set You know in simple terms what ‘plagiarism means’ These could be co-constructed either.

What do you know already? An optional activity is elicit from the students what they already know and feedback onto a whiteboard.. This means that you can go more quickly through the slides focusing on areas that need developing. Or you could skip this slide and just work through the powerpoint.

Let’s explore … On your Firefly dashboard, either … or … Students should open their laptops from now and complete the activities.

You will arrive at this page: Ask if there are any that the students have and haven’t heard of and talk through them. . What do you see? Reflect on the many different resources we have on offer.

More than just a house for books … Use Destiny, our library catalogue, to help you search for all the resources we have. This is much quicker than browsing the shelves Can you remember what these symbols mean? If you can’t find what you need then ask for help! SFF Secondary Fiction SSF Secondary Senior Fiction - Grown up books SNF - Non Ficiton SDV - Secondary DVDs Stress how important the team are. Also focus on the need to be polite to the librarians. Ask if they know who Ms Sal and Mr M are. SFF SSF SNF SDV There are posters around to help you.

Home Learning – we can help Non-Fiction Research We are unusual in that we have a wonderful Non Fiction section. IT IS NOT USED enough. When completing research DO NOT forget the books. Remind your teachers to order boxes of books to be sent to your classroom on topics you are studying. Remember everything you learned in Primary. Use the Super Six. Think about your specific learning focus to help work out what is the Treasure and what is the Trash … ‘Search Smart’. If you have tried and are struggling, then ask a librarian to help.

Super Six Teachers could stop the students at this point and ask them to recap in pairs or small groups what the six steps are and discuss how they are useful when completing assignments.

This is a great educational resource. WebPath Express is an online search engine that is specifically tailored to educational researching. However, you need to know how to use it to make best use of its features. Take a look at the Screen Cast to find out more. The advantages of it over Google are: It is safe to use as the sites have been vetted. As its database is smaller it will take you less time to find what you need for your learning, saving you time. It has an excellent filter system that can cut out the sites you do not need to worry about and find those you want. You can search for age appropriate websites. Each website has a proper ‘blurb’ with it, so that you can decide whether it is relevant before opening and reading it. This really is good. It is worth staff having a look at this if you haven’t. However, you might not want to spend too long on this slide. You can use the ‘Ctrl+F’ key combination to quickly locate keywords in the blurbs, making location of suitable websites very fast. It opens a new tab every time you click on a search link – therefore, never losing your original search page. Spend a few minutes exploring now.

Spend a few minutes exploring this now. Destiny Discover is a tool you may not know about. Destiny Discover enables you to search your school’s books, eBooks and digital resources, saving you time as well as finding whether we have what you need. Duang. Can you update this slide do you think please. We will have to take out the screen cast as it isn’t universal search anymore. Spend a few minutes exploring this now.

You can access it here. World Book Online This database has really been improved lately. The area you will find most useful is here: You can access it here. Remote ID: bpswbhome Remote PW: wbhome12 Consider the benefits of using an education database that the school subscribes to for completing home learning activities. Take a few minutes to explore this now.

Plagiarism You will learn more about this in a separate lesson, but for now can you explain What is plagiarism? Why is it wrong to plagiarise? How can we avoid plagiarising? This could be completed as a quick pair work activity that you feedback later. (Lena, this needs building into the CAT club unit.).

Home Learning – we can help … Bibliographies You will be expected to include your sources and not plagiarise. Not sure how to do this? Come and ask ☺ Alternatively, we have a guide to help on our website … In the guide there is a quick guide that is useful to send children to.

Harvard Referencing The link to Harvard Referencing Guide is on your Secondary Library page. Then it will lead you to the referencing guide. This is linked. Duang is possible to also include on this slide where it can be found on the school website too please

So it is time to practise using your ‘library’ skills What topics are you studying in class, eg in History or Science? If appropriate use the tools we have looked at to find some resources that will help you complete your next assignment.

Success Criteria You can demonstrate that you can use the library databases - WebPath Express and World Book Online You can use the Destiny Library Search Engine You can complete the challenges set You know in simple terms what ‘plagiarism means’ These could be co-constructed either. Duang could you make it so the success criteria pops up one at a time. And also add this same slide in after slide 15 and again at the end of the powerpoint please.

The Fun Stuff READING Staff - I am not sure that many of you will get onto this part, but if you race through - ‘Using the Library for Research then this is a useful follow on.

Making Time to Read Life in Secondary is hectic and you are always on the go. Make use of our Kindles and eBooks so you can read wherever you are. We have a few Kindles with nearly 300 titles preloaded on them for you to borrow. We have bookmarks available at the circulation counter to help you set up the eBooks. If you get stuck just ask for help.

Instructions for adding the Follett eReader to a Smart Device STEP 1 STEP 2 (A) Download and install Destiny Discover from the App store or Google Play. (A) Tap the Destiny Discover icon to go to school’s Follett Shelf. Click to download (B) Search for the eBook you want to read. (B) Enter your Patana Username and Password, then enter the Follett Shelf URL: wbb17463 (C) Tap on the cover or the Open Book link, then tap Checkout and Download Now. Duang is this accurate? If, for any reason, your password does not work – just see a Librarian and they will be able to sort things out for you.
