A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT BRANDS OF TIZANIDINE HCL

CONTENTS INTRODUCTION PURPOSES SIDE EFFECTS MATERIAL AND METHOD RESULTS DISCUSSION

INTRODUCTION TIZANIDINE BELONGS TO A CLASS OF DRUGS CALLED AS ALPHA-2-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS. A CLASS OF DRUGS IS A GROUP OF MEDICATIONS THAT WORK IN SIMILAR WAY. THESE DRUGS ARE OFTEN USED TO TREAT SIMILAR CONDITIONS. AN ADRENERGIC AGONIST IS A DRUG THAT STIMULATES A RESPONSE FROM THE ADRENERGIC RECEPTORS. TIZANIDINE HCL: THE MOST COMMON SALT OF TIZANIDINE IS THE HYDROCHLORIDE SALT AN IMIDAZOLINE DERIVATIVE AND AN ADRENERGIC AGONIST WITH MUSCLE RELAXANT PROPERTY.

 Pharmacological class: Alpha-2-agonist.  Trade name: Zanaflex ( Acorda Therapeutics), Sirdalud (Novartis), Relentus (Beximco pharma)  Pregnancy class: C  Route Of administration: By Mouth.  Bioavailability: The tizanidine that reaches the systemic circulation is only 40%. It decreases due to incomplete absorption.  Appearance: Tizanidine HCl is a white to off-white, fine crystalline powder which is odorless with a faint characteristic odor.  Solubility: Tizanidine is slightly soluble in water and methanol solubility in water decreases as the PH increases.

PURPOSES THE MUSCLE RELAXANT IS USED TO ALLEVIATE THE SYMPTOMS SUCH AS: 1.SPASM: A SPASM IS SUDDEN INVOLUNTARY CONTRACTION OF A MUSCLE, A GROUP OF MUSCLE OR A HOLLOW ORGAN SUCH AS HEART. 2. PAIN: PAIN IS A DISTRESSING FEELING OFTEN CAUSED BY INTENSE OR DAMAGING STIMULI. 3. HYPERREFLEXIA: IT IS DEFINED AS OVERACTIVE OR OVER-RESPONSIVE REFLEXES.

4. Cramping: A cramp is a sudden, involuntary muscle contraction or over-shortening while generally temporary and non-damaging, they can cause a significant pain and a paralysis like immobility of affected muscle. 5. Tightness of muscles: The muscle relaxants are also used to treat the tightness of muscles.

SIDE EFFECTS THE MORE COMMON MAJOR SIDE EFFECTS ARE: CHEST PAIN OR DISCOMFORT FEVER OR CHILLS NAUSEA OR VOMITING NERVOUSNESS PAIN OR BURNING WHILE URINATING UNUSUAL TIREDNESS

The less common major side effects include:  Blurred vision  Flu-like symptoms  Irregular heart beat  Itching skin  Kidney stones  Right upper stomach tenderness  Seeing things that are not there  Shortness of breathe.  Weight gain  Continuing vomiting  Weakness  Headache  Light colored stools

 Apparatus: The apparatus used is as Follows:  Analytical balance  Magnetic stirrer  Pestle and mortar  Graduated pipette 5mL  Conical Flask 100mL  Filter paper  Beaker  Chemicals Used:  0.1M HCL

The method that is used for the analysis of the Tizanidine drug is UV-Vis spectrophotometry Double Beam spectrophotometer : In this type of the spectrophotometer the beam of light splits into two beams before reaching to the sample and then the analysis of reference and sample takes place at same time by passing the beam through them. Different Parts OF Double beam UV-Vis spectrophotometer: Some important parts of the UV-Vis spectrophotometer are: 1.Source of light 2.Wavelength selector 3.Beam splitter 4.Absorption Cells 5.Optical chopper 6.Detector 7.Amplifier 8.Recorder

Results And Discussion I analyzed different brands of Tizanidine hydrochloride by UV/Vis spectrophotometer and find out the percentage and absorbance of active material in each brand with the limits of %. I used five different brands and the percentage of active material i-e Tizanidine hydrochloride in each brand is:  In Lintiz the percentage of active by UV analysis is 101.1%.  In Musidine the percentage of active material is 101.0%.  In Movax the percentage of active by UV analysis is 100%.  In Ternelin the percentage is 99.3%.  In A Gile the percentage is 99.6%.

Discussion: I compare the absorbance of different brands of Tizanidine Hydrochloride obtained from UV/Vis spectrophotometer. Tizanidine is used as a muscle relaxant and used to treat the muscle spasticity. It was observed that percentage of Lintiz is 101.1%, of Musidin is 101%, Movax is 100%, Ternelin is 99.3% and of A Gile is 99.6%. And it was observed that the most accurate absorbance was shown by Movax which is closed to the standard and its percentage is 100%. And the most least absorbance was shown by Ternilin having percentage 99.3%.
