Thank you for inviting me here today Thank you for inviting me here today. This year, ASHRAE President Kent Peterson is focusing on Greater Efficiency Today, Blue Skies Tomorrow. While his theme applies to energy efficiency, ASHRAE should strive for improved efficiency in all areas – member services, research and technology, publications, education – that will result in more “blue skies” for the Society and its members. Today I’d like to share with you not only what we are doing to improve energy efficiency in buildings but in energizing our members and the world.

Sustainability Roadmap www.engineeringforsustainability.org Energy Use Atmospheric Emissions Indoor Air Quality Serving our Members and Society via Research, Education and Standards 2

Increased Energy Efficiency Minimum standards not enough for our Sustainability goals Agreement with U.S. Department of Energy in support of higher energy efficiency Goal for Standard 90.1-2010 is 30 percent energy savings beyond the 2004 standard 3

Zero Energy Buildings ASHRAE Vision 2020 plan commits Society to providing tools for producing market-viable net-zero-energy buildings by 2030 Action Plan Highlights Develop a building rating and branding system Extend 90.1 beyond heating and cooling Certify Sustainability Design Experts Board adopted the Vision 20/20 plan at the 2007 Annual Meeting Net zero energy building defined as a building that produces as much energy as it uses when measured at the site. New buildings are the focus but existing buildings must be included. 4

Green Building Standard Standard 189.1P is the first such green building standard in the US Will serve as benchmark for sustainable green buildings – does not apply to all buildings Addresses energy, impact on the atmosphere, sustainable sites, water use, materials and resources, and IEQ Standard 189P, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. Gone out for first public review Being developed in conjunction with Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and U.S. Green Building Council Purpose: to provide minimum requirements for the design of high performance, green buildings to Balance environmental responsibility, resource efficiency, occupant comfort and wellbeing, and community sensitivity, Support the goal of development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Scope - not intended for all buildings – just those striving to be high performance Energy efficiency will be a large part of the standard. The goal is to achieve a minimum of 30 percent reduction in energy cost (and carbon dioxide equivalent) over that in proposed Standard 90.1-2007 5

New Standards Coming Standard 189.2P - Design, Construction and Operation of High Performance Green Healthcare Facilities Standard 191P - Efficient Use of Water in Building, Site and Mechanical Systems Standard Methods for Power Measurement Title, Purpose & Scope (TPS) approved in June for Standard 189.2P and Standard Methods for Power Measurement TPS revised on water conservation standard already in progress 6

Advanced Energy Design Guidance Move industry toward net-zero-energy buildings Small office buildings Small retail buildings K-12 Warehouses www.ashrae.org/aedg Guidance on achieving 30 percent energy savings over minimum standards available through Advanced Energy Design Guide series Provide sensible, hands-on approach to design through use of products that are practical and commercially available as “off-the-shelf” technology from manufacturers. Written with AIA, IESNA, DOE and USGBC Guides available on small office and small retail; upcoming guides on k-12 and warehouses Include specific recommendations for energy-efficient improvements in the areas of building envelope, lighting, HVAC equipment and systems and service water heating. Bonus savings strategies to improve energy efficiency beyond the 30 percent are included for exterior façade lighting, parking lot lighting and plug loads.

Performance Measurement Protocols Will provide a consistent method of measuring, expressing and comparing energy use, water use and indoor environment of buildings Will establish baseline criteria in each area Will further development of building energy performance standards Project being conducted by ASHRAE, Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE based in England) and U.S. Green Building Council Project began in January 2007; schedule to be completed by September 2007 Project includes comprehensive evaluation of literature followed by writing of a special publication that presents protocols

Advanced Indoor Air Quality Design Guide To provide practical guidance on design and construction, including decisions that affect operation and maintenance Cooperative effort between ASHRAE and AIA, BOMA, EPA, SMACNA and USGBC Started in fall of 2006 60% draft for peer review in February 2008 9

ASHRAE Headquarters Construction slated to begin September 15 Incorporates ASHRAE technology and demonstrates its strong commitment to sustainability Features living lab, and learning and meeting center www.ashrae.org/building Estimated cost of $5.4 million Will be applying for LEED Gold certification Level one of the building will feature a multi-split variable refrigerant flow DX fan coil units with zoned inverter-driven outdoor DX heat pumps (cooling), with a DX low ambient heat pump mode for heating. Level two will feature ground source DX heat pumps for cooling, and DX extended range heat pump mode for heating. Both will use a common dedicated outside air system (DOAS), with dual-stage air-to-air enthalpy heat exchanger with packaged DX air-cooled condensers for cooling, and an enthalpy heat recovery wheel with emergency electric reheat coil for heating.

Certification Healthcare design professional certification launched in June Next exam available online Sustainability scheduled June 2008 www.ashrae.org/certification 42 people took first exam held at Annual Meeting The price for the HFDP examination is $275 for ASHRAE members and $395 for non-members. The next scheduled certification program is sustainability; due to launch in June 2008 Future programs to be launched over the next 18 months will most likely include Commissioning; and Building Operations and Management

eLearning Courses available on Fundamentals of HVAC Systems and 90.1 10 courses planned covering control systems, Standard 62.1, refrigeration, sustainability, 90.1 for architects, psychrometrics, and commissioning. www.ashrae-elearning.org “Effective and great way to learn - especially when time and funds are always at a premium” - customer testimonial
