What is History? Lesson 1 pgs. 4-8

Why Study History? History explains why things are the way they are. For example, the invention of the wheel in prehistoric times paved the way for the use of horse-drawn carts in later time periods. The carts were a step toward the invention of the automobile in modern times. Learning about the past helps us understand the present. It can help us make decisions about the future. Studying history helps us understand how we fit into the human story. Some of the clues are the languages we speak, the technologies we use, and the pastimes we enjoy. All these are results of events that happened in the past.

Measuring Time One way to measure time is to label groups of years. 10 years= Decade 100 years= Century 10 Centuries= Millennium History is divided into larger blocks of times known as eras. A historical era is a large block of time.

Calendar A calendar is a system for arranging days in order. Different cultures have developed 40 different calendars. Some cultures develop calendars based on nature, such as the cycle of the moon.

Julian Calendar The calendar we use today is based on the Julian calendar developed by Julius Caesar, a roman leader. This calendar started counting years at the founding of Rome. A year on the Julian calendar= 365 ¼ days long. The calendar added an extra day every 4 years. The year with the extra day was called leap year. However, the Julian calendar was still not precisely, or exactly, right. It lost several minutes each year which added up to about one lost day every 128 years.

Gregorian Calendar By A.D. 1582, the Julian calendar was losing time- about 10 days. Pope Gregory XIII decided to create a new calendar starting with the birth of Jesus Next, he ordered the days between Oct. 4th and Oct. 15th of that year to be dropped from the calendar. Like the Julian calendar, the Gregorian calendar includes leap years. However, no century year will be a leap year unless it is divisible by 400 such as the year 2000. That way it will take thousands of years before there is another lost day. We use this calendar today.

Dating Events In the Gregorian calendar, the years before the birth of Jesus are known as B.C. The years after are called “A.D.” To avoid a religious reference in dating, many historians prefer to use the initials “B.C.E” (“before the common era”) this is the same as B.C. “C.E.” (“common era”) same as A.D.

Using Timelines A timeline is another way to tack the passage of time. Timelines show the order of events within a period of time. Most timelines are divided into even sections of time. Events are placed on a timeline at the date when the event occurred. Timelines help historians make sense of the follow of events.

What are some important events in the lives of family members? Births Marriages Deaths Emigrating from one country to another These sort of events are your family history.
