What is plot? Plot is the sequence of events in a story. Problem + trial and error + character change = resolution (bad or good)

1. Exposition This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Characters and setting Introduction of conflict Any other necessary info to set the story up
Important Parts of the Exposition Setting Time Place Characters Protagonist: The main character; the hero Antagonist: The character who is in conflict with the protagonist in some way; the “bad guy”
CHARACTERIZATION How we get to know a character throughout a story. Actions- what they do; how they act Speaking- things they say, and how they say them Thoughts- what they think about or what drives them Reactions of Others- what others generally think of them or how they react to them Appearance- what they physically look like
2. Rising Action Presents a conflict Attempts to solve conflict- leading to the climax
Conflict The struggle between two forces in the story. Internal: character faces a struggle within himself (man vs. self) External: Character faces struggle with an outside force (man vs. man, man vs. nature)
3. Climax The climax is the “high point” or “turning point.” Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict – overcoming it or being overcome by it.
4. Falling Action All loose ends of the plot are tied up. Clean up begins
5. Resolution The story comes to a reasonable ending.

Event #4 Big Bad Wolf blows the stick house down and Pig #1 and #2 escape to Pig # 3’s house. Rising Action RESOLUTION: The Big Bad Wolf is so scared of the 3 Pigs that he runs off in the woods never to be seen again. The 3 little pigs live happily ever after. Event #3 Big Bad Wolf blows the straw house down and pig #1 escapes to Pig #2’s house. Event #2 Pig #1 builds a house of straw, Pig #2 builds a house of sticks, and Pig # 3 builds a house of bricks.
