The American Revolution Section 4 Chapter 4 U.S. History Mr. Kissam

Independence! The Big Idea The war spread to the southern colonies, where the British were finally defeated. Main Ideas Patriot forces faced many problems in the war in the South. The American Patriots finally defeated the British at the Battle of Yorktown. The British and the Americans officially ended the war by signing the Treaty of Paris of 1783.

War in the South War was not going well for British in North, so they set their sights on South.

War in the South The British hoped to find support from a large Loyalist population in Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia

War in the South The British planned to free slaves and enlist them as British soldiers.

Brutal Fighting Patriots fought the Loyalists in direct combat in South.

Brutal Fighting Georgia fell to British in 1778; Charleston, South Carolina, in 1780.

Battle of Camden Americans attacked British in August 1780, but failed to drive them out of South Carolina and suffered many casualties.

Brutal Fighting In 1780, British Gen. Charles Cornwallis faced American Gen. Horatio Gates at the “The Battle of Camden” in South Carolina

Brutal Fighting The Battle of Camden was a huge defeat for the Patriots. The British Army was unopposed in the South.

Brutal Fighting Francis Marion, nicknamed the Swamp Fox, was more successful using guerrilla warfare against British.

Path to Victory Nathaniel Greene assumed command of all remnant Patriot forces. He would avoid pitch battles with the British and only attack British forts, that protected the British supply lines.

Battle of Yorktown General Charles Cornwallis moved British forces to Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781 to stay in connection with the British fleet.

Battle of Yorktown Washington’s Continental Army and French troops under Comte de Rochambeau surrounded the British.

Battle of Yorktown Cornwallis surrendered on October 19, 1781, after weeks of fighting. Patriots took 8,000 prisoners–the largest British army in America.

Battle of Yorktown Cornwallis surrendered the 2nd largest British Army in North America. When the British surrendered their weapons, they played the song “World Turn Upside Down.”

Battle of Yorktown The Battle of Yorktown was the last major battle of the American Revolution.

The Treaty of Paris After Yorktown, there were only a few small battles. The British lacked money to pay for a new army, so they entered into peace talks with the Patriots.

The Treaty of Paris The British and the Americans officially ended the war by signing the Treaty of Paris of 1783.

The Treaty of Paris Treaty of Paris of 1783 The war was declared over Britain recognized American independence. Set America’s borders Accepted America’s right to settle west of the original thirteen colonies.

“Treaty of Paris”

“Newburgh Conspiracy” “I have grown gray in your service, and now find myself growing blind.”

Farewell to Washington In December of 1783, Gen. Washington resigned from the army now that the war was over.

Inspirations The French Revolution (1789) and Haitian Revolution (1804) were inspired by the American Revolution.
