Technology in Middle School

Is this normal today? Facilitator Notes: Pose the question “Is this normal today to all be sitting around one TV, watching the same show at the same time?” You may want to ask instead what their normal evening looks like at home. © Education Elements

Is this more like your normal today? Facilitator Notes: This may instead look like what your normal evening looks like at home. We live in a world of hyper-personalization. We can watch what we want, where we want, and we have information at our fingertips. Students are used to instant and immediate gratification.

Today we will Understanding the tech tools available to HPM students Explore ways to help our kids navigate their digital world by Learning how teens are using technology in their everyday lives

Students and Their Digital World One of our jobs as parents and teachers is to help our kids navigate their digital world.

This is where we are

Daily Entertainment Media Consumption Tweens (8-12 year olds) 6 hours a day (5.55) Teens (13-18 year olds) 9 hours a day (8.56)

5 Steps to a Healthy Media Diet Choose the good stuff Watch, listen, and play together Keep a balance Walk the walk Watch the clock

Choose the good stuff

Watch, listen, and play together Know what your kids are watching, what they are playing, and what they are listening to.

Keep a balance

Walk the Walk Watch the clock Model for your children Watch the clock Screen free times No screens during dinner Screen free zones No screens in bedrooms

Chris Anderson editor Wired and drone creator “This is rule No. 1: There are no screens in the bedroom. Period. Ever.”

Negative Effects Compromised Sleep- blue glow decreases melatonin Absorbed by media Addicted to response Instant response from others- counting likes

Another thought…. “less than 16% of teens have created, appeared in, or received a sext” …..but that means

Consequences of Sexting No privacy online! Child pornography charges Registered sex offender Vicious bullying Sexting Handbook for Teens No privacy online!

Children Differ in their Consumption Gaming Listening to music and social media YouTube

Understanding Gaming Understand the lure and limit time gaming Internet Gaming Disorder Rewards- Community Responsibility Comradeship Escape Understand the lure and limit time gaming

Instagram - Basics “Photos shared in Instagram are public and may have location information unless privacy settings are adjusted. Instagram Direct allows users to send private photos directly to other users.”

Instagram concerns Inappropriate photos Bullying responses to post

Teach kids how to handle inappropriate content Delete Tell you, the parent Never share

Snapchat Basics 1 to 10 second image Stories - series of snaps Live for 24 hours

Snapchat Concerns Screen shots (notified) Other phones Illusion + appeal of disappearing Remember: Nothing is temporary

Kik 13-18 w/parent permission Other Apps Whisper 17 Kik 13-18 w/parent permission Yik Yak 17 Ask.fm 13 Vine 17 Being shut down - if hasn’t already happened Yik Yak is a social media smartphone application. It is available for iOS and Android and it allows people to create and view discussion threads within a 5-mile radius (termed "Yaks" by the application).[2] All users have the ability to contribute to the stream by writing, responding, and "voting up" or "voting down" (liking or disliking) yaks. Whisper is a mobile app available without charge, which says that it allows users to send messages anonymously, and to receive replies.[3][4] Users post messages, known as "whispers," which are displayed as text superimposed over an image automatically retrieved from Whisper's own search engine or uploaded by the user. Kik Messenger, commonly called simply Kik, is a proprietary instant messenger software application (app) for mobile devices from the Canadian company Kik Interactive, available free of charge on iOS, Android, and Windows Phoneoperating systems.[1] Kik Messenger is modeled after BlackBerry Messenger.[2] It uses a smartphone's data plan or Wi-Fi to transmit and receive messages, photos, videos, sketches, mobile webpages, and other content after users register a username. The app has been criticized as unsafe for minors due to its anonymity features and allegedly weak parental control mechanisms. ASKfm is a global social networking site where users create profiles and can send each other questions. Vine is a short-form video sharing service where users can share six-second-long looping video clips

AfterSchool New, highly popular app Students have to verify with Facebook account
