Integrated Approach Sports Nutrition Exercise Sports Physiology Rehabilitation Medicine Sports Biomechanics Orthopedic Surgery Integrated Center for Sports Science & Sports Medicine Sports Medicine Athletic Training Education Clinicals Research To offer students the strongest academic preparation for their chosen field, I believe degrees should be granted in the parent discipline for each specialty. Too often degree programs in exercise “science” are watered down in Departments of Physical Education, Kinesiology, or Health Science. This practice has led to stereotypes and stigmas against sports scientists, that are often justified. We need to be a cut above the rest. Physiologist should get degrees in physiology; nutritionists in nutrition; biomechanist in biology/engineering; and psychologist in psychology. Likewise, those on the sports medicine side, should be adequately prepared to take licensure exams. This slide shows a schematic of how Sports Medicine/Science degrees could be offered on campus with a central Center for Excellence in Sport to maintain the highest educational standards for each discipline. Ideally we would all offer classes and conduct research in common classroom and laboratories to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations and build a single identity. Students would take lower division classes in their respective departments, but take upper division classes together at the center. Students could get involved with projects for the respective NGBs. Research would be conducted in common laboratories to share resources and ideas. Primary Care Physical Therapy Behavioral Health Occupational Therapy Sports Psychology
