Day 1 Vocabulary Study : Chapter Day 1 Vocabulary Study : Chapter. 2 The First People Bell ringer: September 6, 2017 Take out your composition book and some colors. Paste the map of Africa Color the map green Draw and label the Nile River blue pg.29 Around the map define the following words using colors: prehistory, hominid, ancestor, tool, Paleolithic Era, society, hunter-gathers

Prehistory – the time before there was writing Anthropology– the study of humans Writing was not invented until about 5,000 years ago. Historians rely on the work of archaeologist and anthropologist to study prehistory.

Hominid– an early ancestor of humans Ancestor– a relative who lived in the past Scientist classify early humans as hominids Modern day humans are called “Homo sapiens” also known as “wise men” They appeared in Africa about 200,000 years ago

Paleolithic Era– The first part of the Stone Ages also known as the Old Stone Age Tool-- any handheld object that has been modified to help a person accomplish a task Examples: Hand ax -break tree limbs -dig -to cut animal hides Spear - Could allow the humans to throw the tools and catch larger animals

Society– a community of people who share a common culture Hunter-Gathers– people who hunt animals and gather wild plants, seeds, fruits, and nuts to survive Distribute– to divide among a group of people

*Society*Hunter-gathers*Distribute Hunters-gathers lived in small groups and during bad weather they were sheltered by caves. They sometimes had to move when water or food became scarce. Men usually traveled in herds to hunt. Women usually gathered fruits, wild plants, seeds, etc. and stayed close to home to take care of the children.

Language, Art, Religion Language = most important development Art = way to communicate and make hunting easier Religion = believe to have started due to artifacts and food being found in burial sites.

Day 4 Bell ringer: September 8 Take out your composition book. Define land bridge. (Chp 2.2) Look at a map of the world and identify a land bridge that still exist today. Cut and paste ICE AGE image into composition book.

Ice Ages- a period of time of freezing weather Migrate- to move land bridge- a strip of land connecting two continents Climate patterns— -Shaped the earth’s geography -caused Old Stone Age people to migrate -these freezing weather patterns = ice ages Land bridges = how stone age people crossed to other continents Each continent had people living there except Antarctica

Mesolithic Era- Middle Stone Ages Basic Needs: Adapting to very cold climates= fire and sewing animal skins for clothing Shelter= caves-----pit houses (roofs of branches and trees) Advancements: Shelter= mammoth houses because wood was scarce in Central Asia smaller and more complex tools Hooks and fishing spears Canoes to travel on rivers Pottery Dogs to help hunt and protect Mesolithic Era- Middle Stone Ages
