Bumper Cars You will each be given a card with information on about the role and treatment of women in Islam. You need to move around the room and ‘bump’ into someone. When you meet them you need to read them your card and vice versa. You then swap cards and continue to move around the room. The aim is to remember as many facts as you can by the end of the activity. At the end you will be asked to sit down and write as many facts as you can – e-refs will be awarded to people who can remember the most!

How did you do? When a woman works the money she earns is theirs as it is the duty of the husband to care financially for the family. It says in the Qur’an ‘husbands should take care of their wives.’ Women are expected to carry out religious duties such as praying, fasting and doing good works.   Women don’t have to attend the mosque 5 times a day to pray. If they do attend they must pray in a separate area to men. If no man is present, women can be the imam and lead the prayers in the mosque. In some Muslim societies there are restrictions on women’s rights. In Saudi Arabia women must be chaperoned outside the home and must be fully covered in public. Men and women are of equal value in Islam. Men and women will be judged equally on the Day of Judgement. Traditionally a woman’s duty is to look after the home and children. A woman’s role in the home includes looking after her husband, preparing halal food for the family and teaching the children the basics of Islam. Women can work and have responsibility outside of the home. Many Muslim women in Britain have professional roles such as lawyers and doctors.   When students have finished they need to sit down as see how many they can remember. When they can’t remember anymore go through the answers and get students to jot down any they forgot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C4-_MD9LOQ – If you would like to show more on restrictions on women in Saudi Arabia show some of this clip.

Islam Teachings on the Status and Role of Women - Summary The status and role of women in Islam Women are of equal value in the eyes of God Women have different roles to men Men and women have been designed by God for different purposes Traditionally it is the mans job to provide for the family and a woman's duty is to look after the home and children. Women don’t have to attend daily prayers at the mosque. If they do, they pray in a separate area. In some Muslim societies there are restrictions on women’s rights, e.g. Saudi Arabia This slide summarises to students the idea that although women have equal value to men they are seen as having different roles. Men and women are of equal value to God Men and women are equally accountable for their actions and will both be judged on the Day of Judgement
