ECISD DUAL CREDIT

What is Dual Credit? Dual Credit is the opportunity for your student to begin college courses while still being enrolled into high school. Students will receive dual credit for College & High School. Seniors will typically graduate high school with 30 or more hours of college credit. (That equals one year at College) Dual Credit courses are college based courses therefore your student will receive the highest level of rigor. Keep in mind these are college level courses and must be treated with the highest level of importance. All dual credit cores courses are weighted on a 6.5 or 6.0 grade point average scale. Core courses include; English, History, Math, and Science. We look forward to assisting your students through their college planning process.

Dual Credit Procedures Students must take the TSI exam and must meet the benchmarks for college-level courses. Apply for Admissions for either Odessa College or UTPB. Official High School transcript-Students must produce an Official High School transcript before enrolling into either OC or UTPB. ECISD Dual Credit Permission Form-must be signed by the student & parent and returned to Mrs. Perkins Payment must be completed by payment deadline Proof of registration and payment. (White receipt needs to be returned to Ms. Perkins or Ms. Moreno in order for your Academic Counselor can change your schedule) Students must attend dual credit orientation if the student enrolls into Online Courses.

Dual Credit TSI Exemptions Freshmen-Seniors EOC English II- Must score level II with a scale score of 4000 to be exempt from the Reading & Writing sections of the TSI. EOC Algebra I- Must score level II with a scale score of 4000 and must have passed Algebra II with a 70 or higher to be exempt from the Math section of the TSI. ACT- Composite score of 23, with a 19 in math and/or English exempts for corresponding sections. SAT- Combined score of 1070, with 500 in math and/or critical reading for corresponding sections. PSAT- Combined verbal and mathematics score of 1070, minimum of 50 in math and/or verbal. If your student does not meet one of the following exemptions then the student must take a TSI assessment.

TSI REQUIREMENTS The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has established minimum TSI Scores for the TSI EXAM test. Scores at or above the following standards must be met in order to place into college-level courses: Reading 351+ Math 350+ Writing Objective 363+ w/Writing Essay 4 Writing (Essay) 5 or Results are immediately distributed to the student and will need to be brought back to Mrs. Perkins for evaluation.

TSI Testing for Odessa College Prior to testing on the TSI EXAM: Students must complete the Pre- Assessment www.odessa.edu On the right hand side click on DC4 Complete the Pre-Assessment Print the certificate and take the certificate to the Testing Center Students may test Monday- Thursday 8:00-5:00 or Friday 8:00- 12:00. No appointment needed but a $29.00 testing fee will apply and the student must present a photo ID and have their social security card. Please take all sections of the test (Math, Reading and Writing) Return testing results into Ms. Perkins

TSI Testing for UTPB Prior to testing the student must complete the Pre-Assessment by following the instructions below: Go to UTPB.EDU Go to search box type in TSI Go to the first link for TSI Go TSI Pre-Assessment Slide show the students must take this first then each student will need to print out the certificate. Then scan and email the Pre Assessment certificate to Johnson_ke@utpb.edu and cc: cress_h@utpb.edu Then the student will contact the PASS office at UTPB for the TSI Assessment Exam at 432-552-2632 Return TSI results to Mrs. Perkins

Freshmen & Sophomore Courses Dual Credit Criteria for 9th & 10th grade students: Students must demonstrate college readiness by mastering the TSI assessment. The following courses are available for Freshmen at Odessa College: Speech 1315 BCIS 1305 Psychology 2301 Sociology 1301 Arts 1301, 1303, 1304 Kine-1100 & 1106 Spanish 1411 & 1412 (Student must have ECISD Spanish I) Music Appreciation (Student must have their fine arts credit completed prior to taking this course.)

Dual Credit Process Every student must be TSI exempt. Once your student meets TSI standards, the student will then visit with Ms. Perkins at Permian or Ms. Moreno at OHS. The students will fill out an online application through Odessa College by going to www.applytexas.org Ms. Perkins or Ms. Moreno will approve your students courses and complete the proper paperwork. Once the paperwork is completed by Ms. Perkins or Ms. Moreno, the student and the parent, the student will bring their paperwork to our designated registration periods. The student will then register and Ms. Perkins or Ms. Morenowill make a copy of the schedule receipt. The scheduled receipts will be returned to your Academic Counselors so that your schedule can change. Payment is due on the due date. (NO EXEMPTIONS). Each receipt will have a payment due date. You will pay Odessa College not Permian High School.

Dual Credit Forms Application for Admission www.applytexas.org Grant Access to Student Records Form Allows parents to access their students grades and records. If this form is not signed by the parent you may not access your students records. Dual Credit Registration Form Must be signed by Ms. Perkins every semester of enrollment and she must approve your courses. ECISD Dual Credit Agreement Must be signed by the parent and student before registering for dual credit.

Dual Credit Drop/Withdrawal Students who express a desire to withdrawal from or drop a dual credit course must meet with Ms. Perkins or Ms. Moreno immediately. Students who drop courses will be placed into a regular course at Permian or OHS. We will not place your student from dual credit into AP courses. Ms. Perkins or Ms. Moreno will monitor all students progress and will provide the following counseling and intervention: Review of pace and progress Discussion of available learning support services and tutoring Discuss of Satisfactory Academic Progress as it relates to future Financial Aid. Ms. Perkins or Ms. Moreno will notify students and parents when the student is in jeopardy of failing for the semester. Please monitor your students grades.

ECISD Dual Credit Agreement I understand that college level work is more rigorous and that grading policies differ from ECISD. (Example: College instructors are not required to take a minimum number of grades.) I understand that college grades are reported as “progress grades” and not averaged each six weeks. A final grade is reported at the end of the semester and will replace all 6-week grades. I understand that if a student is having difficulty in his/her class, it is the student’s responsibility to conference with the instructor, NOT THE PARENTS RESPONSIBILITY. Students can find instructor phone numbers, office hours and email addresses on the OC webpage. I understand that if a student has failed or is failing college level subject in the current or previous semester, the College Counselor will not give the student permission to register for a college class in the same subject the following semester. A student denied registration for dual classes may appeal to the campus principal.

ECISD Dual Credit Agreement Continued I understand that I must contact my college counselor in order to drop a class. I understand that I must drop college classes during the first three weeks of the class so that placement can be made to a class on campus. Students who have extenuating circumstances and want to drop after the three-week period must obtain special permission from the college counselor. Approved students will be scheduled into a regular class on campus, but will be informed of options to regain the credit. I understand that, if I drop below 5 classes, I will be a part-time student and will not be UIL eligible. I understand that Permian High School will follow all district policies and UIL eligibility guidelines for students who drop a class while failing. (Local district policies are posted on the ECISD website and UIL eligibility guidelines can be found in the UIL side by side.) I understand that I must attend Dual Credit Orientation at the designated times. If I don’t attend the orientation I will be dropped immediately from my dual credit courses.

UTPB Admission Requirements Juniors & Seniors Only Follow the Texas Recommended or Distinguished Plan Be in the 1st Quarter of the graduating class or 2nd quarter of the graduating class with one of the following test scores SAT (CR+M)= 900 or higher; ACT of 19 or higher; PSAT of 90 or higher; or PACT of 19 or higher. Meet the TSI requirements in all three sections: Reading 351+ Math 350+ Writing Essay 5 or Writing Objective 363+ w/essay of 4

Scholarships Scholarships are available for Odessa College for the Fall & Spring Semesters Only UTPB offers a $500.00 SPUR scholarship for every dual credit class that is completed through UTPB.

Reminders This is a College Course. Students will begin building their college transcripts. Students must register for every Semester. Students taking online courses must attend a mandatory dual credit orientation at the beginning of the year. Payments are due on the designated due date. No Exemptions. If payments are not made the student will be dropped from the course. Students are responsible for making contact with their professors. It is not anyone else’s job but theirs. 
