Order of Operations P E 2 3+(5-4)+3 M 3+(5-4)+9 D 3+1+9 A 13 S The rules of which calculation comes first in an expression. (PEMDAS) P arentheses E 2 xponents 3+(5-4)+3 M 3+(5-4)+9 ultiply D 3+1+9 ivide A 13 dd S ubtract Example of a 2

(Multiplication/Divition) Eight times three is; There aren't any -20 PEMDAS 3 4 2 8 24 3 - . (Multiplication/Divition) Eight times three is; There aren't any parentheses! (Addition or Subtracton) Four minus twenty-four is; (Exponents) Two to the power of three is; Example of a 3

32 = ? + P E M S A D 25 33 (8 x 2) 16 8 2 -1 5 Order of Operations 52 Order of Operations The last thing you do is add or subtract….. First you would start with completing any work in the parenthesis…. Then you would solve any exponents in the equation.. BUT like multiplication and division you solve what ever comes first…….adding or subtracting Next you would solve any multiplication or division…….. Order of operations is the order you solve an equation in …….. You have to start with P and then work your way over through each of the letters…… BUT you solve what ever comes first in the equation…..if divide comes first you divide first….and so on P stands for parenthesis E stands for exponent M stands for multiplication D stands for divide A stands for add S stands for subtract A great and easy way to remember this is through 2 = 32 ? 25 + 33 (8 x 2) 16 8 2 -1 5 P E M S A D Remember with: PLEASE EXCUSE MY DEAR AUNT SALLY Example of a 4

What is the value of the expression below? 4-2 3 • A. -20 B. -14 C. 18 D. 24 Example of a 4

P E M D A S So class, what is the answer? Uhmm… Uhhh... a x u i d u r p l v d b e o t i t n n I d r t e p e a h n l c e t y t s s e s Good! Now come up and solve this problem! So class, what is the answer? Maybe it will help if I tell you that the order of operations is the sequence in which the various operations in a mathematical expression are to be evaluated. Uhhh... Uhmm… I have! I wrote it on my paper! Come see! Has anyone ever heard of PEMDAS?

Parentheses are first, but there's none in this problem. Check it out! Check out this PEMDAS Rap I found online! 8 4-24=-20 Parentheses are first, but there's none in this problem. Our answer is -20, or A. Now, we multiply or divide from left to right. We have to multiply 2x2x2 to find the value. Exponents are next, and I see one! Now we have 4-24! 2x2=4. 4x2=8. 8x3=24.

Scoring At the end of each rotation (yellow, green, blue) you will receive a grade for completion of assignment (definition/visual) and adding custom animation and more to at least 5 of the 20-22 slides. On your score sheet circle the 5 slide numbers you have added custom animation to and put a star next to the slide # you have brought to a 4 by adding action buttons and or a story! Rotation Slide # My Score 1 60 2 75 3 85 4 95-100 15 1-20 Completed at least 10 words with definitions visuals Completed all slides with definitions and visuals Complete all slides with definitions, visuals and custom animation to at least 5 slides Complete all slides with definitions, visuals, custom animation to 5 1 slide tells a story with great design and or has an action setting to an activity/video 16 21-41 17 42-63
