A Tour of the Northeast Close your eyes . . . Imagine that you are sitting on a train, about to embark on an amazing journey to see some of the most important landmarks in the Northeast region.

Imagine looking out your window, the land around you flying by in the blink of an eye.

Here we are! We made it to our first stop – West Quoddy Head in Lubec, Maine. West Quoddy Head State Park is the home of a historical landmark – a lighthouse which overlooks Sails Rock. Sail Rock is the easternmost point in the continental United States. Let’s check out the lighthouse . . .

This is the granite marker that shows that the lighthouse is at the easternmost point.

Here it is! This is the only “candy striped” lighthouse in all of the United States! The first tower was made of wood and was built in 1808 by order of President Thomas Jefferson. It was redone in brick in 1857.

Let’s walk to the top of the tower Let’s walk to the top of the tower. We’ll have to walk up the circular staircase to get there. It’s about 50 steps to the top! Get out of your chair and start walking . . .

Keep Going!

Whew! We made it! Let’s look out the tower window . . .

There’s Sail Rock! Wow, someone is standing right there at the easternmost point.

It’s starting to get dark. Let’s go and see the lighthouse. Visit the lighthouse!

Well, it’s time to keep moving Well, it’s time to keep moving. Here are some fun facts about West Quoddy Head: The lighthouse was originally lit by whale oil. It is now powered by electricity. The light flashes 24 hours a day in this sequence: 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on, 9 seconds off. The light can be seen from 15-18 miles away (depending on fog conditions). The tower is 49 feet high. The stripe design includes alternating stripes. There are 8 red stripes and seven white stripes (the top and bottom stripes are both red. The house connected to the lighthouse was previously the home of the lightkeeper. It is now the visitor’s center.

On to our next stop. Hang on, the train is starting to move!

Grab your bags, this is our stop. We have arrived at Mt. Washington!

Mt. Washington, New Hampshire Mt. Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast region, at an elevation of 6,288 feet above sea level. Mt. Washington is located at the heart of White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. Mt. Washington holds the world record for wind speed at 231 mph.

Let’s check out this video to see just how cold and windy it can be on Mount Washington . . . Tour Mount Washington!

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I don’t know about you, but Mt. Washington is too cold for me! Let’s hop back on the train towards stop number three – Plymouth, Massachusets.

On to our next stop. Hang on, the train is starting to move!

Stop #3: Plymouth, Massachusets Plymouth is a famous landmark because it was there that the Mayflower made its famous landing at Plymouth Rock in 1620. Plymouth became the first settlement of the English colonists.

Welcome to Plymouth! Tour the Mayflower! Today, Plymouth is still a place rich in history. Many residents of Plymouth work hard to recreate what Plymouth was like in the 1620s. The Mayflower 2 is a replica of the ship that carried the pilgrims to the New World. You can also visit Plymouth Rock, although historians now know that the pilgrims did not actually land there. Tour the Mayflower!

Uh oh. We need to be back at school in time for dismissal Uh oh! We need to be back at school in time for dismissal! Let’s go catch a train to Boston Common . . .

Boston Common Boston Common is the oldest public park in the U.S.A.! Its history goes back as far as 1634, when the area was designated as a pasture for animals, a military practice area, and a site for public hangings. Later in 1830, it became a park and has been ever since.
