The Metric System
Classe de bonjour. Aujourd'hui nous apprendrons du système métrique.
International System of Units Abbreviated SI -Système International d‘Unités System of units of measurement Developed from France’s metric system.
What is the metric system? Based on powers of 10 Easy to convert. Based on something logical.-the Earth
What is the unit for length? A meter. We use a ruler or meter stick to measure length. Never use inches!
What is the unit for length? Originally the meter was 1/10,000,000 the Earth’s circumference (North pole through Paris to Equator). 10,000,000 m 10,000 km
What is the unit for mass? A gram. We use a triple beam balance or electronic balance to measure mass.
What is the unit for volume? A liter. We use a graduated cylinder to measure volume. Volume is the amount of space something takes up.
BIG What is a metric prefix? A small word at the beginning of a bigger word. Science has and small prefixes but they are similar to compare. BIG
What are the metric prefixes? Abbreviation What it means Example KILO k x 1000 Huge HECTO h x 100 Big DECA da x 10 Large BASE m, l, g Meter, liter, gram Normal DECI d 1/10 Small CENTI c 1/100 Tiny MILLI m 1/1000 Miniscule
Metric Prefixes (cont.) For REALLY big and small Tera 1012 1,000,000,000,000 (trillion) Giga 109 1,000,000,000 (billion) Mega 106 1,000,000 (million) Micro 10-6 0.000001 (millionth) Nano 10-9 0.000000001 (billionth) Pico 10-12 0.000000000001 (trillionth) Notice: in science we use multiples of 3 for scientific notation Gigabyte > Megabyte
What is the metric staircase? An easy way to convert from large prefixes to small or a small prefix to a large.
Metric Stairs Kilo (k) Hecto (h) Deca (da) BASE Deci (d) Centi (c) Milli (m)
What are the steps to convert? Mark your base. Mark your starting prefix point & move on the steps to the desired prefix. Move the decimal left or right depending on which way you went on the stairs and the number of stairs.
Metric Stairs k h da d c m gram Liter meter — g L m g L m g L m g L m
100cm = ? m 100cm = 1.00m k h da - d c m Mark your base Mark your starting & move Move 2 steps to the left Move decimal 2 to the left c m m m 100cm = 1.00m
10 cg = ? mg 10cg = 100mg k h da - d c m Mark your base 10 cg = ? mg k g h g da g - g d g Mark your base Mark your starting & move Move 1 step to the right Move decimal 1 to the right c g m g 10cg = 100mg
k h da m,L,g d c m
So let’s measure!
