#55 Dormancy A period when the life cycle of an organism is stopped or slows down if: Food is scarce Drought occurs The weather is too hot/cold

Dormancy Group Assignment Dormancy Group Assignment *Hibernation, Torpor, Estivation, and Seed/Plant Dormancy With a partner, you will make a quick poster including the following information about your assigned form of dormancy: When/why does this happen? Describe what happens to the plant/animal when this occurs. Give 3-5 examples of species that experience this form of dormancy. 3 pictures/visuals

Hibernation When/Why: Winter months, when its too cold Description: reduced heartbeat and breathing rate; animal appears to be dead; occurs in small animals Examples: box turtles, alpine marmots, hedgehogs, garter snakes

Torpor When/Why: Winter months, when its too cold Description: reduced heartbeat and breathing rate, not as extreme as hibernation, animal will wake up periodically Examples: hummingbirds, badgers, raccoons, skunks, bears

Estivation When/Why: summer months, when its too hot or if there is a drought Description: does not move, grow, or eat Examples: snails, crabs, crocodiles, salamanders, mosquitos

Plant/Seed Dormancy When/Why: Winter months, when its too cold Description: the plant life cycle is put on pause, does not grow during this time Examples: grasses, trees, shrubs
