Our context Exceed Teaching Schools Alliance, Bradford – led by Copthorne Primary School and Horton Grange Primary School. Exceed SCITT, Bradford – led by Copthorne Primary School, provides school centred initial teacher training. The SCITT can award Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Both “outstanding” schools, designated Teaching Schools and National Support Schools. Alliance: A partnership of schools supporting each other to improve. Government policy: schools to lead school improvement across partnerships of schools (Teaching Schools). Teaching Schools and SCITTs to train the next generation of teachers. HEI/Universities are not the preferred training route anymore. Current teachers and school leaders are the best people to train new teachers! Exceed Teaching Schools Alliance, Bradford – successful School Direct programme for four years. 2016: 24 trainees secured employment – 100% employment rate

Routes into teaching Qualified Teacher Status Teaching without QTS Undergraduate route: 3 or 4 year long courses. BA QTS. Almost entirely primary. Postgraduate route: 1 year courses. Primary and Secondary School Direct Unsalaried with QTS and a PGCE SCITT core unsalaried places (provider-led places) with QTS and PGCE University-based PGCE with QTS Employment based routes: School Direct Salaried with QTS and a PGCE (self-funded if school agrees) Other routes Teach First Troops into Teachers Assessment only Teaching without QTS Free Schools Independent Sector Early Years Teacher School Direct

What is School Direct? Selection and training in schools, by school leaders Schools training teachers with a view to their own employment needs, i.e. we hope to give you a job! Training more in school led by teachers involving children and young people 2013-14: Nationally, 96% of unsalaried, 97% of salaried School Direct trainees secured employment compared to 94% trained through HEIs 2016: 100% employment rate for Exceed trainees Government prefers trainee teachers to be trained by schools

Minimum Quals & Experience School Direct Unsalaried School Direct Salaried You meet at least the minimum requirements PGCE and QTS 1 year course About 180 days training in 2 schools 30+ days training – much in Alliance schools You pay £9,000 in fees You can apply for bursaries and SFE loans You meet at least the minimum requirements Three years of relevant work experience, not necessarily with children and young people QTS only, optional PGCE 1 year course About 180 days training in 2 schools 30+ days training – much in Alliance schools You are paid approx. £16,500 a year GCSE grade C: English (P&S), Maths (P&S), Science (P) Lower Second Class Honours For secondary, 50% of your degree in the subject you want to teach * 2 weeks work experience with children or young people DBS clearance Professional Skills Test – Literacy and Numeracy

Apply through UCAS from 18th October 2016 Choose your training provider – 3 choices Think very carefully about your personal statement Interviews from October Complete Skills Tests? Written task to assess your written communication capacity to access master’s level study Observation of you in a classroom situation. Interview by Exceed SCITT, Bradford including a demonstration of a teaching resource Then a (conditional) offer Complete Skills Test ASAP (by May 2017 at very latest)

Selection process 15-minute lesson based on a text, e.g. activity with children based on an age-appropriate book Written activities – maths, English, SPAG Interview – as informal as possible, Headteacher. We’re looking for potential – not outstanding teachers yet! Positive relationships with children Experience of voluntary or paid working in a school or similar setting – at least 2 weeks, more the better Ability to study at Masters level Clear and accurate written and spoken English, correct pronunciation
