The National Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Republic of Belarus covering the period to 2020 (NSDS-2020) Creates a legal basis for changes Is formulated pursuant to the Law of Belarus “On State Forecasting and Socio-Economic Development Programs of the Republic of Belarus” For the first time, Belarusian NSDS was elaborated and approved by the Government in 1997 (NSDS-1997). It was predicated on the precepts and guidelines of “The Agenda 21” formulated by the UN Conference on Environment and Development (Rio de Janeiro, 1992).

Sustainable development strategies (Local Agenda 21) initiatives in Belarus

Coordination Council on Education for Sustainable Development is organized under the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus Coordination Center for support of the Council activities is created on the basis of the International Sakharov Environmental University.

Role of Renewable Energy and ISEU Activities Sustainable Development in Belarus Role of Renewable Energy and ISEU Activities

TECHNICAL BASE OF TRAINING AND RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF RES Since 1999 the University has been using, for training purposes and for energy-supply of the building, solar collector for water heating, and solarvoltaic array for ground floor tell-tale light (supplied from Austria, Land Forarlberg).

DEMONSTRATIONAL SITE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES It is located in ISEU training and research complex in Volma village not far from Minsk Мinsk Volma 7

It is planed to create the wind park (80+80 MWt) in the region of Volma (firm «Enertrag» (Germany)), which will be used not only for electrical energy production, bat for training students and retraining specialists in the field of renewable (especially, wind) energy.

Micro-hydropower plant 0,4 – 1,5 kW

There have been developed ecological methods for degraded soils rehabilitation based on use of rapidly growing plantations of trees as a renewable biofuel (at present ISEU has 3 experimental and study sites). 1-st year of life 2-nd year of life

In cooperation with Austrian Energy Agency the university was provided by heat pump (10 kW), which is getting to operation in the near future in Volma
