The Program Lady Maverick Track and Field 101 Quick Note on Discipline and Team Rules Do Right! This generally covers a multitude of miscues. Be on Time! When we show up late we show that we don’t care about our teammates’ time as much as we care about our own. Tardiness will be discouraged by extra conditioning. If tardiness continues to be a problem, the athlete may be put on suspension or removed from the program. Missing Practice or Event! If a player is going to miss practice for any reason, the coach must be informed directly. If it is last minute, the parent must contact the coach. Training Room! Players will participate as capable, with a doctor’s note being the exception. Students must participate regularly to receive credit. Athletes must attend practice. Injured players must dress out, attend practice and do treatments in the athletic training room as prescribed. Excused absences are: Dr’s appointments with a note. Training room is CLOSED and off limits during the athletic period. Any treatment will be done before or after school ONLY. Be Respectful! Respect others and you will be respected. Social Media! As listed above…RESPECT is the key! Any online communication (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc) that involves inappropriate comments or photos will not be tolerated. Dress Appropriately! Wear what is asked of you. Take care of your business in the Classroom! If you do not pass you cannot play. All students who fail to turn in assignments, will also fail to participate in practice and ultimately in meets, if assignments are not completed.
The Program Cont’ Transportation! All athletes will travel to away meets on the bus and return to the school on the bus. The only exception is in the case of an emergency. REMEMBER THAT TRAVELING IS A PRIVILEGE. The Team! Will participate in community activities and fundraisers during the week or weekend. Athletes will need to actively attend these functions and represent the program well. Manvel Maverick Booster Club! We need your help!!! Our Athletic Booster Club supports our athletes and programs by fundraising and donations. Our first meeting is on the first Monday of each month @ 6:00 p.m., in the L.G.I. (Manvel HS). Please come and be supportive for our track program. Cell Phones! Cell phones are NOT permitted during class time and/or the track. Parents will be given a practice time schedule when to pick up their child from practice. Failure to comply and follow the guidelines will be dismissal from the team. Awards! Athlete’s must complete the season and score (10) points in the major varsity meets, or place (1st, 2nd, 3rd) in the district meet as an individual or as a member of a relay team to receive letter jacket. Athletes must be in good standing with coaches, teachers, administrators, students and all other staff members. Athlete will not receive awards if player quits the team, is ineligible, or if athlete is removed before the season ends. Understand your role! You are the student/athlete not the coach. Submit to those who are over you and stick to the plan. ATHLETES MUST ABIDE BY THE ALVIN ISD AND MANVEL HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC HANDBOOK AT ALL TIMES. ** Rules are only in place to keep us all moving in the same direction. Failure to follow these rules/guidelines can be grounds for dismissal.

PARENT / COACH RELATIONSHIPS: uil.edu Both parenting and coaching are very difficult vocations. By establishing an understanding between coaches and parents, both are better able to accept the actions of the other and provide a more positive experience for everyone. Parents have the right to know, and understand, the expectations placed on them and their children. Coaches have the right to know that if parents have a concern, they will discuss it with the coach at the appropriate time & place. Communication parents should expect from their child’s coach: Coach’s philosophy. Expectations the coach has for your son or daughter, as well as other players on the team. Locations and times of practices and contests. Team requirements, i.e., fees, special equipment needed, school and team rules, off-season expectations. Procedures that will be followed if your child becomes injured during participation. Communication coaches expect from parents: Concerns regarding their son or daughter expressed directly to the coach at the appropriate time and place. Specific concerns in regard to the coach’s philosophy and / or expectations. Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance. As your child becomes involved in interscholastic athletics, they will experience some of the most rewarding moments of their lives. It’s important to understand there may be times when things do not go the way you or your child wishes. These are the times discussion with the coach is encouraged.
Parent and Coach Communication UIL.edu Appropriate concerns to discuss with a coach: The mental and physical treatment of your child. What your child needs to do to improve. Concerns about your child’s behavior. It is very difficult to accept your child is not participating as much as you may hope. Coaches’ make decisions based on what they believe is in the best interest of all students participating. As you can see from the list above, certain things can and should be discussed with your child’s coach. Other things, such as those listed next, must be left to the discretion of the coach. Issues NOT appropriate for discussion with your child’s coach: How many running events each athlete is getting. Team Strategy. Play calling. Any situation that deals with other student-athletes. There are situations that may require a conference between the coach and parent. These are not discouraged, as it is important for each party to have a clear understanding of the other’ position. When these conferences are necessary, the following procedure is suggested to help promote resolution to the issue. If a parent has a concern to discuss with the coach, the following procedure should be followed: Call the coach to set up an appointment. If the coach cannot be reached, call the athletic secretary and ask her to set up a meeting with the coach for you. Think about what you expect to accomplish as a result of the meeting. Stick to discussing the facts, as you understand them. Do not confront the coach before, during or after practice or contest. These can be emotional times for both the parent and coach. Meeting of this nature do not promote resolution of the situation, but often escalate it.
