Reading/ Writing Students will be learning strategies and vocabulary to improve their reading fluency and comprehension. The reading block is divided into Read Aloud, Shared Reading in which the focus skill is introduced, Guided Reading in which the focus skill is practiced in a small group setting, and Independent Reading where students read and apply the skills and strategies that were taught. Students need to be reading books on their level and when available, take AR test when they finish reading a book. Students will have weekly spelling words. Every Monday, students will receive the list. Monday night’s homework is to define the words, in ABC order, including the part of speech (noun, verb, adverb, adjective). This work must be completed in the Spelling section of their Word Work Journals. The Spelling menu assignment is due every Friday. Students will receive  writing/grammar related assignments as needed.

Social Studies We are excited to learn about map skills and US History from the time of exploration through 20th century. 6

Math Concepts covered are place value, multiplication, long division, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators, geometry, measurement and problem solving. It is essential that your child know his/her basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). 7

Science This year we will cover Physical Science, Earth Science, and Life Science. Students will be participating in the school science fair as well as the district STEAM fair. The majority of the projects will be worked on in class, but the data collection will happen at home. Information about dates and requirements will come later. Please make sure your child has everything he/she needs for my class. A spare composition notebook will be good to have ready as we will completely fill the current ones by the end of the semester (if not before). Homework may come home some nights. It is extremely important that you make sure your student is getting the work done and returned to class the next school day. Science matters!!

Homework Your child will have to read for 30 minutes, complete the reading log, and do math homework every school night. Occasionally your child will have additional reading homework. Science and social studies homework will be given on an as needed basis. 9

STAAR TESTING Students in 5th grade are tested in the areas of reading, math, and science in March and May.

Behavior Students who follow the school and classroom rules will be positively rewarded through the use of treats, stickers, special jobs, praise, and free time. For each behavior strike a child receives during the day, a consequence will follow. One strike is a warning, two strikes causes a loss of half of recess, three strikes causes loss of all recess and a parent note, four strikes causes parent phone call and temporary removal of student from the class, and five strikes causes an automatic referral to the office.

Behavior In addition there is zero-tolerance, school-wide policy against bullying. We are a classroom community and here to learn and get along, respecting everyone. Parents will be notified of any situations involving bullying.

Student Planners Students will use their planners to record daily homework. Refer to it as needed. Tell your child to let us know if you have written a note. Remember to write a note if your child’s transportation changes. Unless we have a note, your child will go home as usual. 13

Tuesday Folder Every Tuesday your child will be bringing home a folder marked “Tuesday Folder”. This folder will contain graded papers and important notes from our school & community. Please sign and return any information that needs to be returned to school on the following day. 14
