Tanning Beds

Background Information Devices emit ultraviolet radiation to produce cosmetic tans Tanning beds are most used globally by teenage girls Lights in tanning beds were originally used to treat rickets patients 2006 research found people used tanning beds even when they were aware of risks, tended to be addicted to UV rays, sometimes experiencing a ‘high’, similar to drug addictions

Its convenient, saves time and money for people with busy schedules or budget limitations Tanning beds helps body produce vitamin D which keeps your teeth, bones and joints strong Less probability of getting skin burns Pros;

Causes genetic damage in skin cells which helps cancer cells develop and spread Over use results in wrinkled skin, age spots and skin dehydration Ultraviolet radiation levels to eye is over 100 times greater than natural sunlight, meaning corneal burns and occasional retinal damage can occur Cons;

Canada’s Current Position Governments should regulate indoor tanning industry by requiring UV-emitting devices to be registered, staff to be licensed, equipment and premises inspected regularly UV-emitting devices should be clearly labelled to explains health risks Indoor tanning industries must stop using misleading phrases such as safe, no harmful rays, no adverse effects or similar wording Canada’s Current Position

My Beliefs & Opinions Tanning beds should be limited in use due to severe health risks People should be encouraged to use natural sun light for cosmetic reasons Consumers must only be allowed to use a tanning bed for defined exposure hours per year where it’s a necessity
