Extended Opportunity Programs and Services EOPS IS A STATE-FUNDED STUDENT SERVICE PROGRAM THAT PROMOTES ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AMONG STUDENTS FROM LOW-INCOME, UNDER-REPRESENTED BACKGROUNDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION. EOPS PROMOTES EXCELLENCE BY OFFERING SERVICES THAT ARE “ABOVE, BEYOND AND IN ADDITION TO” SERVICES AVAILABLE TO ALL LMC STUDENTS.

EOPS Facts The EOPS program was created in 1969. It enabled low income, educationally disadvantaged students “affected by language, social, and economic handicaps” the ability to achieve a college education. There are 114 EOPS programs funded in 72 districts throughout the community colleges system Data supports that EOPS increases the chances that a student will graduate or transfer

EOPS Facts EOPS serves over 80,000 students per year Gender: 63% Female and 36% Male Age: 67% of students are 24 or younger 16-17 State Budget: $107.570 Million Dollars LMC EOPS Budget: $822,559 LMC Required Textbook Expenditure: $151,955 Actual LMC Textbook expense: $230,000

CARE Facts CARE is a state funded program that was established in 1982. Presently, 114 programs in all 72 districts of the California Community Colleges system CARE is as a supplemental component of EOPS. A unique educational program geared toward the welfare recipient. CARE provides educational support services designed for the academically underprepared, low income, single parent population.

Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) program Eligibility California residents who meet all EOPS eligibility requirements as per Title 5 regulations Enrolled as a students in a vocational certificate, associate degree or transfer program At least 18 years of age Single heads of household (i.e., one-parent CalWORKs assistance unit as verified by county) Have one child under 18 years of age at the time of acceptance into CARE Current recipients of TANF/CalWORKs cash aid for themselves or their child(ren)

What are some reasons why a student should meet with a Counselor or Academic Advisor?

Counseling Services Policy No children allowed (District policy) No-show, cancel, and/or rescheduled appointments will not be guaranteed make-up Drop-ins: Aug 14th – 18th and Nov 13th – 17th. After 10 minutes, no admittance “Please arrive a few minutes early”

Counseling Services Cont- “My other program has counseling requirements” Exception: A student may meet with a non- EOPS counselor for 1 of the 3 required counseling appointments “How do I schedule a counseling appointment”? Schedule appointments in person or by phone EOPS sends an appointment reminder

EOPS Counseling Appointments 1st Counseling Appt: August 21st – October 20th What happens? You and the counselor implement an Educational Plan for 4-6 semesters. We get to know you. We discuss Transfer, AA/AS, certificate How long is appt? New Students meet for 1 hour – Continuing Students ½ hour 2nd Counseling Peer Mentoring Appt: – September 4th – Dec 1st What happens? You will have a quick check in with your peer mentor. “How’s everything going” “Do you need any additional resources” How long is my appt.? Typically 15 mins 3rd Counseling Appt: October 2nd – December 15th What happens? Discuss any changes in your educational plan, prepare and/or discuss priority registration, progress and prepare for next semester’s coursework. How long is appt.? Typically ½ hour

New Changes to EOPS Ability to drop down to 8 units after meeting with Counselor w/o penalty (twice during your entire time in EOPS) StarFish Early Alert Software replacing Progress Reports Parking Permits will not be provided this semester EOPS Cash Grants $$$75 – Fulfill Contract obligations

New Changes to EOPS Tier 1 and Tier 2 Limited Services Tier 1 Students will receive the same services - reduced book voucher amount Tier 2 Students will not be eligible for a book voucher or cash grant

Starfish Early Alert Software This semester we will be using Starfish Early Alert software to track you academic progress. There is a letter in your binder with instructions on how to create your profile. Your instructor will send you an alert via the Starfish software. Starfish will send an email with a link to the alert. The alert will indicate that you are exceling in the class or that you may need to improve your academic performance in the classroom.

E.O.P.S. 6 PACK– Checklist Meet with your EOPS Counselor 3 times per semester, unless you meet with another counselor for 1 or the 3 appts. Have an educational plan on file. Ed. Plan must be updated once a year. Complete a minimum of 12 units your first semester, Unless you have a waiver. Check your Starfish Updates Utilize PRIORITY REGISTRATION Must maintain a 2.O Grade Point Average while in the program
