It is important to be an active readers. Active vs Passive It is important to be an active readers.

SQ4R- Nonfiction Strategy

Step 1: Survey Read the title, introduction (if there is one), headings/ subheadings, captions, bold/ italicized terms, summary/ conclusion, and end of reading questions.

Step 2: Question Turn the headings/ topic sentences into questions. Use who, what, where, when, why, and how.

Step 3: Read Read the first section.

Step 4: Reflect Briefly stop at the end of each paragraph to think about what you read. Did the material answer the question that you created from the heading? If you didn’t understand something in the reading, reread it. If you are still unsure, put a ? in the margin so that you can ask for clarification.

Step 5: wRite Write, underline, or highlight the answers to your questions. Jot down any other important information.

Step 6: Read, Reflect, and Write Again Continue reading, reflecting, and writing until you complete the assigned reading.

The Last R: Review Scan the material again. Look over your notes, highlights, and questions. See if you can answer your heading questions from memory. Reread your questions from your teacher and answer them.
