Community Partner | Student-Directed Programs Annual Orientation 2017-2018

Mission Statement The Bennion Center fosters lifelong service and civic participation by engaging the University with the greater community in action, change and learning. Create an impact in the community (community impact & leverage the resources of students and higher ed to the community issue. Also, how can they add their unique gifts/skills to your organization) Allow students the opportunity for growth/development (student learning, deeply engaged experiences, students first and creating engaged citizens)

Student Leadership and Involvement Directly connect academic interests and skills to positively impact communities Gain valuable experiential knowledge Develop and enhance leadership skills Improve civic competencies

What Are Civic Competencies What Are Civic Competencies? Civic competencies are a set of defined behaviors, practices, and cognitive abilities that enable the individual to be an effective influencer in positive community change. Civic Skills: Abilities developed and utilized to influence positive community change. Civic Awareness: Cognizance of interconnectedness among individuals, society, and systems. Civic Habits: Regular behavior related to community engagement. Civic Values: Expressed desires and beliefs related to social responsibility.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Community Partner Provide a meaningful volunteer experience for Program Director(s) and other volunteers. Create a safe and welcoming environment. Comply with all risk reduction/management strategies and meet liability standards. Provide training as necessary. Ensure volunteer responsibilities are reasonable in regard to time, cost and capabilities.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Community Partner Meet requirements set forth for program participation. Community Partner Agreement meetings Annual Reporting & Evaluations Identify a full-time staff person to serve as the program liaison and primary contact.
