Congress 2007 WIMnet OUR AIMS : Support the mining industry to attract and retain talented women Encourage membership of, and participation in, The AusIMM and WIMNet Activities Promote increasing diversity within the mining industry Support and encourage individuals within the mining industry Engage in advocacy on issues in support of diversity and work life balance

Congress 2007 WIMnet Measure women’s participation in AusIMM PRIORITIES FOR 2007: Measure women’s participation in AusIMM - ratified by board Identify ways to improve womens participation in AusIMM -Encourage women to join AusIMM Upgrade membership where applicable Participate fully Encouraging face to face networking Support women in mining networking groups

How well are we doing? 7% of AusIMM (no increase since 2004) Women comprise: ~45% of national workforce ~18% of mining industry workforce ~18% of technical & professional mining workforce ~3% of site-based mining workforce and 7% of AusIMM (no increase since 2004) National workforce gender pay gap 19% Mining industry gender pay gap 28% WHY?

Congress 2007 WIMnet Is AusIMM welcoming to women ISSUES/CONCERNS WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE DEBATED AT CONGRESS: Is AusIMM welcoming to women How can branches encourage women to join and participate? How can branches and WIMnet work together eg on networking events?

What can we do? WIMnet At our meetings Women friendly venues Varied meeting times Topics for the whole professional Topics for less traditional disciplines Work with local Wimnet networking groups (WIMWA,  WIMARQ etc) Encourage women speakers and chairs of sessions at conferences

What can we do? WIMnet Individual members can Promote loyalty and pride in the industry – a sense of belonging, involvement Encourage women to join AusIMM Encourage women to upgrade their membership Nominate outstanding women for awards (branch service, other AusIMM awards) Encourage women to mentor others

Next year? WIMnet Consider workshop session at next Congress Present research outcomes possible root causes, suggested improvements from female members and ex-members, membership statistics and trends Branch initiatives Present what has worked in specific branches Brainstorm other improvement ideas
