New Year, New Series!!! 7th Grade January 2017 Booktalks

Life as We Knew It by Susan Pfeffer This is the first in a series of 4 interconnected books The protagonist is Miranda, typical 15 year old girl with typical teenage problems (school, divorced parents, peers, etc) The book begins when everyone is awaiting a “big event”---a meteor hitting the moon It is a common occurrence and what causes the moon’s craters Neighbors arrange viewing parties and teachers assign papers on the topic---Miranda has to write 3 separate ones! Scientists miscalculated---widespread tsunamis, flooding, tidal waves, loss of power, death, destruction, etc… Told through Miranda’s diaries over almost the course of a year

Red Queen (Bk 1 of 3)by Victoria Aveyard A society divided by the color of their blood…red and silvers Reds are commoners, forced to work hard and go to war (men and women) Silvers are elite (godlike) with supernatural abilities (mind control, brute strength, speed, telekinesis, to name a few) Mare Barrows is born a red and supports her family by stealing from anyone she can A chance meeting with a royal silver changes things Mare is employed at the palace and makes a deal that her family and friends are cared for (blood) lines are crossed when it is revealed to a surprised Mare that she also has powers, but still bleeds red. Who will win? Who can Mare trust? And what prince can she trust?

Everlost by Neal Shusterman (Skinjacker Book #1) Main characters Nick and Allie don’t survive the car crash, both dying on impact Their souls are stuck halfway between life and death in a place called Everlost (a place where if you stay still too long you sink to the center of the earth) Everlost is set in NYC, and all of the “lost” souls live in the Twin Towers that passed into the Everworld Allie and Nick arrive there and meet Mary and all of her “kids” who live the same exact day over and over for all of eternity Allie convinces her friends to escape and there they happen upon the evil McGill and his captives Can Allie convince McGill to help her and will she and the others ever make it “home”?

The Summer I Turned Pretty Jenny Han Story of lifelong friends who are reunited each summer at the beach Main character is Belly, a young girl and the summer she “grew up” Great for fans of realistic fiction & romance, Belly is caught in a love ‘square’---who will she choose?

The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan One of Rick Riordan’s newest books (ties up loose ends left in Magnus Chase series) Main character is Apollo (?) who has been punished by Zeus and is now a 16 year old boy with flabby abs and acne His punishment for failure is to lose his powers (and appearance) and serve a young demigod who has the power to fling trash at will Filled with action-packed fight scenes, laughs and an extremely confident/egotistical protagonist as well as other favorites (Percy and Sally) from series past Website
