Endangered animals around the world… Click on an area to see who lives where… North America Europe Asia Africa South America Australia Home

North America Home Help the GEA Back to Map The Bald Eagle is the national emblem of the United States and is the only eagle native to North America. Luckily, over the last 45 years its population has risen from only 1,000 birds to 70,000 of which half live in Alaska The Brown Bear (or Grizzly Bear as it is often known) can grow to 800lbs which is over 4 times as much as a human. They are however extremely fast and agile and can even climb trees! Home Help the GEA Back to Map

Europe Home Help the GEA Back to Map The Monk Seal is extremely endangered with only about 300-500 animals left in the Mediterranean. They are threatened by nets and fishermen themselves who still consider them competition for fish. The Iberian Lynx is the most endangered of the cat family. It is nocturnal and feeds mainly on rabbits in Spain and Portugal. Lack of food owing to the rabbit disease Myxamatosis is considered largely responsible for its decline. Home Help the GEA Back to Map

Asia Home Help the GEA Back to Map The Bengal Tiger is found throughout India and the Himalayas. It will eat just about anything, even humans! It’s beautiful colouration and markings are as unique as a fingerprint to each animal. Scientists still debate whether the Giant Panda is a type of bear or racoon. Unlike other bears it doesn’t hibernate but it does enjoy a little honey when it can lay its paws on some! Otherwise it lives almost entirely on bamboo. Home Help the GEA Back to Map

Africa Home Help the GEA Back to Map The African Elephant is the bigger relative of the Asian species and is the world’s largest living land animal. Some have been known to eat over 200kgs of vegetation a day. Their ivory tusks were sadly once used to make piano keys. Gorillas live in large family groups in dense scrub across Africa. They eat mainly plants but will eat fruit and sometimes ants and grubs. Contrary to some belief, they are peaceful and gentle animals. Home Help the GEA Back to Map

South America Home Help the GEA Back to Map Blue and Yellow Macaws usually live in pairs or in larger flocks along the rivers of South America and Panama. They eat predominately seeds, fruits and nuts. South American frogs are brightly coloured to warn predators that they are usually highly poisonous. The Blue Poison Frog is considered endangered and is found in Brazil Home Help the GEA Back to Map

Australia Home Help the GEA Back to Map The Dugong lives in Australia with its cousin the Manatee around the Florida coast in America. Part of the Sea Cow family, they are shy harmless creatures that are vegetarian and have no natural predators however they are very sensitive to cold temperatures. Koalas are very fussy eaters, having particular favourites of Eucalyptus tree to feed on. They live in small communities of other Koalas and sleep for up to 18 hours a day! The school is holding a concert in support of the GEA. All proceeds will go directly to helping many of the animals featured in this presentation.
