Put the fun back into them MEETINGS Put the fun back into them

Or should that be “LIONS” ? Put the FUN Back

Where are we Going? How meetings can ‘destroy’ a Club Now let’s Rebuild Eight Words

Lions Club of ANZI

How meetings can DESTROY a Club ! We can do so in 11 steps (Your Club should do the opposite)

1. Do not start the meeting on time (And have no target time set to finish the meeting)

2. Do NOT brief the Guest Speaker Make sure the guest speaker does not know how long to speak Have no particular ending for question time

3. Allow seating cliques to form Members sit in groups Front seats are deserted Ignore guests and/or potential new members Ignore friends of members

4. Member(s) hog all the jobs Tasks not spread around Purposes and Ethics ‘hogged’ by same people Toasts always done by “senior” Lions

5. Let the debate ramble on Long winded Little control Discussion whilst there is NO motion Officer training school

6. Give all the jobs to visitors No jobs for members Treat members as somewhat inferior

7. Ignore NEW Lions Treat newer members as inferior Do not listen to their ideas Tell them “Been there - does not work”

8. “Strong” Members Everything on their terms “Strong” or “Weak” A dangerous breed A good way to destroy a club

9. Push a Specialised Project Somebody’s “Pet” project Other members have no interest Senior Lions (PDG or PCC) can be a problem due to specialised knowledge

10. Be “Laid back” and Friendly No structure No formality No agenda Like standing around the bar

11. Members are Volunteers We will not do more than we want to The President “pushes” not “leads” The President “presides” President: not Proprietor

Job Done !!! Club Destroyed

Now let’s Rebuild… …with Eight Words Three “V” Words One “A” Word Four “F” Words

The “V” Words: VITAL Vim Vigour Excitement

The “V” Words: VOCAL Speak up Have pride Tell your story

The “V” Words: VISIBLE Be seen Stand out Be proud

The “A” Word ASK Then ASK Then ASK again Question your members

The “F” Words: FUN Two minute impromptu talk Heads and Tails Regular guest speakers Simple quiz (simple prize) Other Ideas?

The “F” Words: FELLOWSHIP Have a SECRET GREETER at meetings Meet socially other than at Lions Meetings Have a meal at a Business Meeting Consider removal of separate Board Meetings Encourage Convention attendance Encourage partners to attend whenever possible

The “F” Words: FRIENDSHIP Shake every other Lion by the hand at EVERY meeting Run regular Club social events Offer programs for partners

The “F” Words: FORMALITY Start meetings on time and have a projected finish time Keep the meeting moving Use proper meeting procedure

Meetings can be FUN - & Productive! We have covered: How meetings can ‘destroy’ a Club Rebuilding Eight Words (VVVAFFFF) Please take time to complete a session evaluation Questions
