Exhibit Booth Volunteer Orientation 2017 ASCLS Annual Meeting Welcome to the ASCLS exhibit booth volunteer orientation. Exhibit Booth Volunteer Orientation

Thank you for volunteering Thank you for volunteering for this important job of staffing the ASCLS booth at the annual meeting! Your RD or state president probably asked you to help out and we appreciate it! This short presentation will provide you with information and tips to make your time at the booth helpful and fun.

Check in with ASCLS staff ASCLS Booth #2527 San Diego Convention Center Andrea Hickey Jim Flanigan Karrie Hovis The location of the ASCLS booth at the San Diego Convention Center is listed here. The San Diego Center is within walking distance of the Omni San Diego Hotel. Please allow plenty of time, at least 30 minutes, for travel from the hotel to the San Diego Convention Center. When you arrive at the booth, please find one of the ASCLS onsite staff members – Andrea Hickey, Jim Flanigan or Karrie Hovis. We will help orient you to the booth. By checking in with one of us we also know that help has arrived for each assigned time. We ask that you arrive promptly as you are an integral part of the booth staff during the Expo. Andrea Jim Karrie

Tips for the booth SMILE! You are the FACE & VOICE of ASCLS Ask “Are you familiar with ASCLS?” Use your own experiences What do you value as a member? Share examples of ASCLS activities Download “ASCLS activities” file If you have staffed the booth in the past, then let this be a review for you. If this is your first time, we’d like to offer some tips on how your time spent can be helpful. Your purpose is to be the FACE & VOICE of ASCLS to others. Most attendees at the Clinical Lab Expo are not members of ASCLS so many will stop by to ask about what ASCLS is, what it offers to lab professionals, etc. The first thing we ask you to do is to SMILE! You are the FACE & VOICE of ASCLS so put your best effort forward to greet those that walk by. You may begin by asking those that pass by if they are familiar with ASCLS. Many will not be, so here is your chance to market the value of an ASCLS membership. Respond to questions about what ASCLS offers using your own experiences – what do you value (ce, networking, information, etc.), what do receive from being involved, what do you like about being a member?? Explain how active your region, state, local chapter is; how you have met colleagues from all over your state/nation. Share examples of how ASCLS offers special services to the public – such as the Consumer Information Team which responds daily to hundreds of questions people email in about laboratory testing – or how ASCLS collaborates with other professional groups – such as ASCP, CLMA, AACC and others to keep on eye on federal legislation that affects the laboratory, how ASCLS and other lab groups formed a consortium to look at workforce shortage issues, how ASCLS is leading the profession in looking at a new level of advanced practice. There is an additional handout you may print and bring with you to the booth that lists these types of activities.

What does ASCLS membership provide? Monthly newsletter Quarterly journal (Professional 1 members only) Discounts on P.A.C.E.®-approved continuing education Group rates on insurance Advocacy for legislative, regulatory, and professional issues If someone asks specific questions about tangible member benefits share with them what members receive…

What does ASCLS membership provide? Online CE subscription Certification Maintenance – 12 Hour Option (CM12) Members may purchase online CE for $45/year 12 contact hours of PACE-approved courses Certification Maintenance Unlimited (CMU) Members may purchase unlimited online CE for $85/year Each is a 1-year subscription that coincides with the 2017-18 member year Courses through MediaLab, Inc. http://www.ascls.org/certification-maintenance- packages Another member benefit is that new or renewing members have the option to purchase a one –year subscription for online CE. This was developed to help members get needed CE credits to recertify with the BOC. A member can choose the CM12 for $45/year plus national and state dues. This one year subscription will include 12 hours of PACE-approved courses that include topics from designated discipline hours for the BOC CMP. This special price is available ONLY to ASCLS members. Members can also choose the CMU option in which they would pay $85/year in addition to national and state dues and can select an unlimited number of online courses. The subscription coincides with the ASCLS membership year so will expire on July 31 of next year. The online courses are offered by MediaLab, Inc., a company that develops CE courses for lab professionals. Renewing professional certification has never been easier – members can learn online, take the quiz online and track CE online via the ASCLS CE Organizer. It is simple! Be sure to promote this member benefit! There are flyers in the booth with details that you can share with others.

Tips for the booth Provide information materials Membership application, if asked Cash/check to ASCLS registration desk Credit card information on application form Online membership application ASCLS Today, Clinical Laboratory Science Educational flyers View various ASCLS products in the booth Thank each person for stopping by You may provide a membership application to those that ask and want to join. If someone inquires about an educator or manager package membership, please refer them to Andrea Hickey at andreah@ascls.org. We are not allowed to transact cash business on the exhibit floor, so if someone is interested in joining with cash or a check, direct him/her to the ASCLS registration desk at the Omni San Diego Hotel. If they want to pay by credit card, they can complete the membership application, including credit card information. You can then give this completed application to an ASCLS staff member and we will process it. A person can also join online at the ASCLS website, www.ascls.org. We will have a computer in the booth with an internet connection, so if someone wants to join immediately, he/she can use the computer to join via the membership area on the ASCLS webpage. A variety of informational items are available to give away in the booth. Some items might include copies of the newsletter, the journal and a number of different flyers to advertise various products and promotions. Be sure that you thank the visitor for stopping by!

Tips for the booth If you are unable to answer a question – ask an ASCLS staff member to assist If one is not available, scan the attendees badge and write down the request If a scanner is unavailable, please handwrite the request. Provide this info to the ASCLS staff member to respond to the request

Tips for the booth Have fun! Be an “ASCLS salesperson” We’re interested in feedback & suggestions Let us know about your booth experience Most importantly – have fun! You are an ASCLS salesperson for a few hours so do your best! It is your time to share all of the positive aspects of your membership! We are also interested in your feedback & suggestions so please let us know how your booth experience goes.

Thank you for volunteering! Questions? Contact Karrie Hovis at karrieh@ascls.org or see a staff member onsite in San Diego. So thanks again for volunteering for this important ASCLS activity! If you have any questions prior to the meeting, you may contact Jim, Andrea or Karrie, or you may see any staff member onsite at the meeting. We look forward to seeing you soon!
