Q3: Effective Conflict Management Part 1: Understanding Personality Types

Study Focus Questions What is conflict? What role does personality type play in the quality of relationships? What causes conflict in relationships (especially in marriage)? Why do some marriages succeed in managing conflict and others fail in the process? What do I need to know/do in order to effectively manage conflict in my home/family relationship?

Text Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife (competition) or vainglory (pride); but in lowliness (humility) of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

Text Proverbs 19:11 The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression

Fundamentals of Human Relationship The inability to get along with others is one of the primary reasons for frustration and unhappiness in life Social skills, not technical competence is the major factor for success in business, work place, life… Most of the joy in life comes from happy relationships (the reverse is also true!) Myers Briggs Personality Test/Workshop…

Myers Briggs Personality Types The essence of the theory is that much seemingly random variation in behavior is actually quite orderly and consistent, being due to basic differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment. Knowledge and understanding of personality types as assessed by the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator can be a tool for personal growth, achieving balance, understanding self, and creating possibilities.

Four Unique Areas of Differences Favorite World:  Do you prefer to focus on the outer world or on your own inner world? This is called Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I) Information:  Do you prefer to focus on the basic information you take in or do you prefer to interpret and add meaning? This is called Sensing (S) or Intuition (N)

Four Unique Areas of Differences Decisions:  When making decisions, do you prefer to first look at logic and consistency or first look at the people and special circumstances? This is called Thinking (T) or Feeling (F) Structure: In dealing with the outside world, do you prefer to get things decided or do you prefer to stay open to new information and options? This is called Judging (J) or Perceiving (P)

Discussion Questions What are the implications of these personality differences on relationships? How can you ensure that the your personality differences don’t obscure your perception, reception, or inclusion of others in your world? Summary Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife (competition) or vainglory (pride); but in lowliness (humility) of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
