Kindergarten Mentor Tutoring 2016-2017

Lesson Plan

Record Sheet

Phoneme Segmentation This activity is done orally. The tutee will listen to the words you say and tell you the sounds they hear in each word. Say to the tutee, “I am going to say a word, tell me all of the sounds you hear in the word. If I say mop, you’ll say /m/ /o/ /p/.” The tutor will underline the sounds that the tutee segments. Teach the tutee to tap the sounds in each word. Record the number of sounds correct on the record sheet

Letter Names and Sounds 1. Letter Naming Students will begin with the first set of letters. Show the kindergartener a flash card and have them tell you the letter name. Make a pile of the letters they get correct and incorrect. Record the number of letters the tutee names correctly on the record sheet. 2. Letter Sounds Teach and practice any unknown letters and sounds. When the student has mastered all of the letter names and sounds in the set, add the next set of letters. You may want to begin with the letters in the child's name if they don’t know them.

Letter Matching m a R N M n A r t T Lay the flash cards face up and have the kindergarten student match the uppercase letter with the lowercase letter. Have the student say the name of each letter as they match them and tell you the sound. N M n A r t T

Using only the lowercase letters, have the kindergartener place a letter card in the sound boxes to spell out the word. Help them hear the beginning, middle, and end sound as they choose a letter and place it in each box. Finish by sounding out the word once all letter cards are placed, then read as a whole word. Practice making and reading as many words as time allows. m a n

the to a and of Sight Words Help the kindergartener learn sight words starting with group 1. Write the words neatly on 3 X 5 cards. Work on 5 words at a time. Move onto the next group of five words only when the previous set is mastered. Record the group of words you’re working on and how many they got correct each day. to a and of
