Dangers to the pure heart

In This Study What is a pure heart? (What God’s word says about purity of heart) Integrity & Honesty Self-Control, Humility & Patience Contentment & Love Dangers to the pure heart –the tongue More Dangers to the pure heart Purifying the Heart (Keeping it pure)

It is imperative that we maintain a pure heart (Prov. 4:23) BUT, there are dangers to keeping the heart pure. In this lesson we will discuss some of these dangers

WARNING! Psa. 66:18, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.” Genesis 6:5, “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

WARNING! Titus 1:15, “To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.”

WARNING! Mark 7:18-23, “Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?...”

WARNING! Mark 7:18-23, “…And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”

Lust Lust is a strong desire to have that which belongs to another or that which you are not entitled to. Lust and its companions (envy, lasciviousness, covetousness, etc.) will quickly taint a pure heart! 1 John 2:15-17

Lust Our society is driven by lust Sensuality is everywhere – television, movies, music, books, magazines, billboards. The greatest purveyors of lust are accessible from our homes! Lust will rapidly taint our hearts

Lust Matthew 6:22-23, The lamp of the body is the eye… Matthew 5:27-28 – Adultery in the heart What we allow into our bodies through the eyes affects our heart. Romans 1:24, “Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,”

Developing Self-Control will help you overcome lust! We must learn to recognize lust and avoid it! Job 31:1, “I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?” 1 Peter 2:11, abstain from fleshly lusts 2 Timothy 2:22 – flee youthful lusts Developing Self-Control will help you overcome lust!

Covetousness The lust for things! Also very prevalent in our society. We live in a materialistic world! The pursuit of things will clutter our hearts Ecclesiastes 7:7, “Surely oppression destroys a wise man’s reason, And a bribe debases the heart.”

Learning contentment will help you overcome covetousness! Luke 8:4-15, esp. 14. Things will corrupt the heart Luke 18:18-23, the rich young ruler! Matthew 6:24 – you cannot serve 2 masters! Learning contentment will help you overcome covetousness!

Pride, Selfishness Pride – the lust for self-exaltation. One who sees himself better than others and he shows it! Pride leads to selfishness - one who cares only about himself! Selfishness is also a problem in society

Pride, Selfishness This can also be a danger in the Lord’s church Selfish members won’t give Pride can cause the church to refuse to change Compromise often the product of pride.

Pride, Selfishness The self-serving attitude will NOT complement a pure heart. Proverbs 16:5, 18, “Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.” “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.” 1 John 3:17 1 Peter 5:5, God resists the proud Developing humility contentment will help you overcome pride & selfishness!

Ignorance Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”

Ignorance Ignorance is a danger in society! It has many consequences. Ignorance will lead one away from God! We live in times of great spiritual ignorance. Sometimes it is WILLFUL ignorance! Are WE encouraging it?

Ignorance 1 Timothy 1:13, Acts 26:9, Paul an example of dangers of ignorance! Yet his work – Acts 26:18, 17:30-31 Ephesians 4:18, having their understanding darkened,…because of the ignorance that is in them…

Bible study will help overcome ignorance 2 Timothy 2:15 Romans 16:18, this is how false teachers work, “…by smooth words and flattering speech(they) deceive the hearts of the simple.” Bible study will help overcome ignorance 2 Timothy 2:15

Busyness We need to be busy! Titus 2:14 tells us to be “zealous for good works” Jesus was busy – Acts 10:38, John 9:4

Busyness It can dilute it and fill it with divided loyalties But busyness is a problem with many today It is a danger to the pure heart because: It can dilute it and fill it with divided loyalties It can distract us from more important matters It can cause us to neglect worship, personal study and prayer, and lead to missed opportunities.

We need to manage our time wisely! Busyness Luke 10:41-42, Martha told, “You are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed…” Matthew 6:33, “Seek first the kingdom of God” We need to manage our time wisely! Ephesians 5:15-16

Bitterness Being resentful and ill-willed Such dispositions will seriously damage the heart. They hinder development and lead to decisions that poison the pure heart.

Developing love will overcome bitterness! James 3:14, “But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.” Ephesians 4:31 1 John 4:20, hatred is often the product of bitterness Developing love will overcome bitterness!

Is your heart pure? What are you doing to ensure its purity? “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.” Proverbs 28:26 Is your heart pure? What are you doing to ensure its purity?
