Proverbs 4 Get Wisdom (4:1-9) Avoid Wicked Men (4:10-19) Guard Your Heart (4:20-27)

Generational Wisdom

3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother, 4 he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live. Proverbs 4:3–4

Get Wisdom Proverbs 4:5–7 (ESV) 5 Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. 6 Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. 7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.

Get Wisdom Proverbs 4:8–9 (ESV) 8 Prize her highly, and she will exalt you; she will honor you if you embrace her. 9 She will place on your head a graceful garland; she will bestow on you a beautiful crown.”

“Wisdom is the greatest possession anyone can have, and the young man should make winning her the primary goal of his life.” D. A. Garrett

Where do we get wisdom?

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Matthew 13:44

‘Creed’ by Steve Turner We believe in Marxfreudanddarwin We believe everything is OK as long as you don’t hurt anyone to the best of your definition of hurt, and to the best of your knowledge. We believe in sex before, during, and after marriage. We believe in the therapy of sin. We believe that adultery is fun. We believe that sodomy’s OK. We believe that taboos are taboo

‘Creed’ by Steve Turner We believe there’s something in horoscopes UFO’s and bent spoons. Jesus was a good man just like Buddha, Mohammed, and ourselves. He was a good moral teacher though we think His good morals were bad. We believe that all religions are basically the same- at least the one that we read was. They all believe in love and goodness. They only differ on matters of creation, sin, heaven, hell, God, and salvation.

‘Creed’ by Steve Turner We believe that after death comes the Nothing Because when you ask the dead what happens they say nothing. We believe that man is essentially good. It’s only his behavior that lets him down. We believe that there is no absolute truth excepting the truth that there is no absolute truth.

GET WISDOM !!

Guarding Your Heart Proverbs 4:20–23 (ESV) 20 My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. 23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45

How do we guard our heart?

How do we guard our heart? Proverbs 4:23–27 (ESV) 23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. 24 Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. 25 Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. 26 Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. 27 Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.

“There is the most intimate connection between the heart as the fountain of the moral life and of the conduct of life, which, though determined by the condition of the heart, in its turn reacts upon the heart as the moral centre, and keeps it pure” Spence-Jones
