Becoming a Pediatrition By: Anna Tettenborn
Why I want to become a pediatrician I want to become a pediatrician because I love kids and it’s my dream to become something in the medical field
My short term goals One of my first short term goals is to graduate high school with mostly A’s Another one of my short term goals is to make it into university and graduate from university
Long term goals One of my long term goals is to shadow a real pediatrician and learn everything they could possibly teach me Another one of my long term goals is to open my own pediatric clinic
Skills, Attributes, and Characteristics needed You obviously have to be good with kids You also have to be someone that parents and kids can trust You have to be extremely nice, and show that you really care You also have to know how to diagnose children and exactly what medicines to prescribe
Years of education needed In Canada it takes four years to complete medical school and three years to complete a general pediatrics residency. Pediatricians whose postgraduate training combines pediatrics with another medical specialty will spend an additional two years in their residency. Overall it could be up to 9 years of school
Salary Pediatricians can make between $80,000 – $288,532 If you are a pediatrician with one specialty you will make more Also as per usual the more experience and years of work you have the higher you get paid
Job description Pediatricians provide medical care to infants, children, adolescents and young adults. They diagnose and treat illnesses, medical conditions and injuries I love working with kids and I also am very intrigued with all things medical
Post secondary education To become a Pediatrician you need to go to university and medical school For university I would like to get my undergraduates degree at UBC or UBCO and be enrolled in the department of pediatrics program The program is 4 years in length Then I would like to stay at UBC or UBCO and attend the faculty of medicine program for medical school This program is also 4 years in length
Admission and tuition For all 4 years of university it will range between $40,000 – $160,000 For medical school it will be between $160,000 - $220,000 To get enrolled into UBC you need to have all of your basic sciences (biology, chemistry, physics etc) You also need volunteer experience and a second language You also need the best grades possible
Possible hurdles A possible hurdle is the cost of tuition A way to overcome this is to start saving all my money from my job now, and also apply for student loans Another hurdle is grades A way to overcome this is to start taking my education a lot more seriously now and that will help get more intrigued in the future
