Analyze your Poetry Prewriting Activity

Pick out your Three or Four Best Poems Read through each one At the top of each poem, list two or three subjects from each poem. For example, from my poem “Abuelito Who” the subjects are family, grandparents, loss, aging, memories Next, write at least one THEME for each poem. For example, a theme for my poem is “Memories can provide comfort.”

Analyze the FORM Form: Lines Punctuation Stanzas Capitalization Indent On your poem, ANNOTATE what you notice about the FORM of EACH poem.

Figurative Language and Imagery Symbol Metaphor Simile Personification Imagery Hyperbole Allusion On your poems, ANNOTATE where you used FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE and IMAGERY

Using Your TONE SHEET, write the TONE for each of your poems

Published Poem… Now we are going to annotate the published poem in the same way we annotated our original poem.

Next Step… Now we are going to move to our poetry groups. A group member needs to read both of your poems to check that you did not miss any poetic devices. After you have completed the peer review of the poems, you must decide which TWO devices you want to use for your analysis of both poems. Tomorrow we will identify themes in both poems and look at how to construct an outline.

Step #3: Finding Two Published Poems Poems #3 and #4 must be from a published author. Poems #3 and #4 must have the same subject, issue, or theme as your Poems #1 and #2. Poems #3 and #4 DO NOT have to be from the same poet.

Where to find those poems… Poetry App by The Poetry Foundation. This App is awesome! You can match a subject with lots of poems. Google search for poems with the same subject, issue, or theme as your poems. Print or copy down your poem (don’t forget to write down the author!) These will have to be typed, one on each page.
