England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. This is LONDON

England's terrain mostly comprises low hills and plains, especially in central and southern England. However, there are uplands in the north (for example, the mountainous Lake District, and the Pennines) and in the south west (for example, Dartmoor and the Cotswolds). The capital is London, which is the largest metropolitan area in both the United Kingdom and the European Union.[nb 1] England's population of over 53 million comprises 84% of the population of the United Kingdom, largely concentrated around London, the South East, and conurbations in the Midlands, the North West, the North East, and Yorkshire, which each developed as major industrial regions during the 19th century.

London has a diverse range of people and cultures, and more than 300 languages are spoken in the region.

Its estimated mid-2015 municipal population (corresponding to Greater London) was 8,673,713, the largest of any city in the European Union, and accounting for 12.5 per cent of the UK population. London's urban area is the second most populous in the EU, after Paris, with 9,787,426 inhabitants at the 2011 census. The city's metropolitan area is one of the most populous in Europe with 13,879,757 inhabitants, while the Greater London Authority states the population of the city-region (covering a large part of the south east) as 22.7 million.[ London was the world's most populous city from around 1831 to 1925.

He built the White Tower. In 1066, after the conquest of England, William the Conqueror chose to move to London in front of the Thames. He built the White Tower. It owed to protect the Northmen and the town of outside attacks. Its name, White Tower, is due to the lime which was applicated on its wall in 1241 by Henri III. Before, Richard Cœur de Lion ordered to dug staves and the construction of a high surrounding wall. Henri III moved in the tower which became the royal residence until Jacques I. The Tower of London is a well-known place for having served as a prison for numbers of important prisoners. It was the prison of State until XIXth century and during the two Worlds Wars. Today, the Tower of London is a tall and touristic place.
