Monday, October 17, 2016 In-Class Writing: Look at pages 6-9 of your study guide and write down the words/phrases that you highlighted on a piece of paper. Use these words/phrases to answer the following writing prompt: Define the mission of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis during World War II. How did they carry out this mission? Please write at least two complete paragraphs including evidence from both Maus and the informational text in your study guide. When you are finished writing, please compete the reading (Chapter 6) and answer the study guide questions. Get a sticker when you are finished. Tomorrow, we will finish our discussion of Maus.

Sort the following questions by DOK Levels: What kind of relationship does Art Spiegelman and his father Vladek have? What happens when Vladek and Anja return from the sanitarium in Czechslovakia? What are they afraid of? Why did Vladek throw away Art’s coat? Which of Vladek’s personality traits do you think are a result of his experience? Explain. Who are the Jewish police? Why is Art surprised to hear about the Jewish police? Mala says that Vladek is more attached to things than people. Why might she say this? Do you agree with her? Cite textual evidence for your judgment.

Sort the following questions by DOK Levels: What is “Prisoner on the Hell Planet”? How is it different from Maus? How is it similar? Why does Art Spiegelman portray the paths as a swastika (p. 125)? What literary device does he employ? Is his purpose successful? Cite textual evidence in your response. What happens to people who live under a terror regime for a long period of time? Research at least two other examples of terror regimes besides the Nazis and provide thorough evidence and examples in your paper. State a theme of Maus and provide an analysis which includes at least three examples of this theme as it plays out in the novel. How does Janina, the governess, react when Vladek and Anja come to her for help? Why?

Write 3-4 Questions for each DOK level… Use a piece of paper folded into four quadrants. Clearly label and write your questions. Be sure to include your name, date, and class period on the assignment. Submit this assignment to the basket.
