Formative vs Summative Assessments

Definition of Formative Assessment Formal and informal processes teachers and students use to gather evidence for the purpose of informing next steps in learning Lovejoy ISD

Importance of Formative Assessment Lovejoy ISD Benefits for Student Benefits for Teachers Students are more motivated to learn. Teachers are able to determine what standards students already know and to what degree. Students take responsibility for their own learning. Teachers can decide what changes in instruction they need to make so that all students can succeed. Students learn valuable lifelong skills such as self-evaluation, self-assessment, and goal setting. Teachers can create appropriate lessons and activities for groups of learners or individual students. Students can become users of assessment alongside the teacher. Teachers can inform students about their current progress in order to help them set goals for improvement. Students become more adept at self-assessment.

Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning --Jan Chappuis Where Am I Going? Strategy 1: Provide students with a clear vision of the learning target. Strategy 2: Use examples and models of strong and weak work. Where Am I Now? Strategy 3: Offer regular descriptive feedback during the learning. (FA) Strategy 4: Teach students to self-assess and set goals for next steps. How Can I Close the Gap? Strategy 5: Use evidence of student learning needs to determine next steps in teaching. (FA) Strategy 6: Design focused instruction, followed by practice with Feedback. (FA) Strategy 7: Provide students opportunities to track, reflect on, and share their learning progress.

Forms can be used for surveys and for setting goals. Show how to do the Quiz feature of Forms- open up a form, go to the settings, click quizzes at top and make it a quiz. You have to add a question before the answer key will come up. The Answer Pad is a freemium, cloud-based app, that creates an interactive dialogue between teachers and students in the classroom. This is done by making a variety of response types, drawings, canvases, and templates available to students on any device with an internet connection.

Quizziz is similar to nearpod and kahoot Quizziz is similar to nearpod and kahoot. It has searchable, public assessments. Students look at their device when using. Other features: math symbols, highlight key words with red, green or blue text, make your own memes.

Let’s try: Go to quizizz.com Samples: US Geography, Famous Olympians The other thing that I like about Quizizz is that it is very easy to use other people’s questions to make your own quiz. I like that you can share on google classroom and make it a homework assignment. Let’s try: Go to quizizz.com
