2014 WR TRAINING VIDEO

TRACK STANCE STANCE & STARTS Description: Player starts as if he is in track blocks, then stand up once you feel comfortable in the blocks, This drill allows the receiver to understand the proper position his feet need to be in Coaching Point: It is important to make sure you have the proper bend in your back leg, allowing you to explode out of your stance.

CHASE STANCE & STARTS Description: 2 receivers are needed for this drill, receivers are 2-3 yards a part stacked in front of one another, the goal is for the back receiver to chase down the receiver in front of him before he reaches 10 yards Coaching Point: Explode off the ball, stay low, drive and do not forget to use your arms

ESCAPES & RELEASES It is imperative that receivers are able to release off the ball and escape man or zone defenders. Various techniques are used while doing this: speed, quickness, fakes, power, and anticipation. Receivers must also exhibit great hand-to-hand skills in tight areas. Second and third level releases are as critical as first level releases. When a defender sits down at 5 or 8 yards, you must have a plan. Escaping man defenders is essential. Building the wall to create throwing lanes is done in a number of methods. Using Horizontal and Vertical separation techniques will best maximize spacing late in the route. The following drills will enable you to put the defender where you want in man cover schemes

PARTNER GAME ESCAPES & RELEASES Description: This is designed to teach receiver how to use his hands when faced with a pressed corner, defender will place his right hand on your right shoulder, use your right hand to knock hand off, use his left hand to secure the defenders arm, then place his right hand on the defenders right shoulder Coaching Point: Quick hands are required, second hand needs to control the defenders elbow

SLAP ESCAPES & RELEASES Description: Using the release side hand, physically slap with an open hand at the defender's elbow. Turn your upper torso simultaneously with the contact to reduce your hitting surface (upper torso). Take your opposite arm and ”Slap" it through release side area (do not punch it - Slap it). Coaching Point: This entire action demands quick and violent movements

CARRY TO DEPTH ESCAPES & RELEASES Description: Use a guy with a hand shield at a prescribed depth. Receiver should collision defender on the route side soft shoulder with his hips down. Coaching Point: Keep your hips square to line of scrimmage. Stay firm with arm closest to defender. Once you reach route depth, explode out of the break.

STACK EM’ ESCAPES & RELEASES Description: Set one defender at the LOS in press overage and the second defender at a depth of 5-10 yards. Receiver must release (Slap or Rip) on first defender, get back on top of him, then release through second defender (you can walk the second defender up or back as receiver approaches). Coaching Point: Receiver must stay on top of DB on the LOS after releasing. Receiver must under control as he approach's second defender.

DUCK UNDER ESCAPES & RELEASES Description: Receiver and defender start up the field. Receiver must make sure defender is hip to hip as he takes his near hand, slaps the near butt check of defender, to get him up field, then takes the opposite arm and rips it underneath Coaching Point: Make sure receiver gets hip to hip before making contact with defender. Make sure that you drop you hips before contact is made. Use leverage to gain an advantage as you explode away from the defender

STUTTER AND GO ESCAPES & RELEASES Description: Receiver and defender start up the field, work to get over top of alignment with defender in a trail position, then stutter your feet enough to break the rhythm of the defender. As the defender slows down, explode out of the break with a head nod and step in the opposite direction you want to go. Coaching Point: Drop your hips on the stutter and explode out of the break

Catching Principles Focus on the front stripe of the ball. Keep your body balanced as much as possible. Extend your arms and attack the ball to cut down the flight time. Relax your body. Adjust to the ball. Lock it away quickly.

1 HAND CATCH CATCHING Description: Coaching Point: Coach throws ball over inside shoulder of receiver, receiver catches ball with outside single hand. Coaching Point: Receiver should track the front end of the ball. Look the ball all the way into the hand and tuck it away. (Repeat with other hand).

OVER THE SHOULDER CATCHING Description: Coaching Point: Coach throws the ball over inside shoulders of receiver as receiver works away. Coaching Point: Receiver must run through ball. Pinky's together- hands come out late secure the catch by tucking the ball away. Note: If ball is short, stop and attack the ball at highest point.

OVER THE HEAD CATCHING Description: Coach throws ball directly over receiver's head as receiver works away. Coaching Point: Receiver should look directly over head - arch his back - have his pinky's together. Cushion on the contact, secure the catch by tucking the ball away

CROSSING IN FRONT CATCHING Description: Coaching Point: Use a yard line to allow receivers to have a visual of staying parallel during the drill Coaching Point: Square your shoulders to coach, extend his arms, thumbs together – soft hands and secure the catch by tucking the ball away

CROSSING BEHIND CATCHING Description: Coaching Point: Use a yard line to allow receivers to have a visual of staying parallel during the drill as coach throws the ball behind him on his back hip Coaching Point: Pinky’s together as you turn hands together while making the catch, it is ok to turn while making the catch

WALKING AT QB CATCHING Description: Receiver starts 15 yards away, walks at coach/QB, catching as many balls as possible until you reach the coach/QB Coaching Point: Attack the catch by extending arms at the ball, thumbs together if ball is thrown above waist, pinkies together if ball thrown below waist

GAUNTLET CATCHING Description: Two lines of WR’s about 4 yards apart forming a tunnel, single WR runs between the WR’s at the QB, WR’s forming tunnel will wave arms to distract WR Coaching Point: Track the ball through the gauntlet, focus on blocking out the distractions as you catch the ball

SEE SAW CATCHING Description: WR is aligned in the middle of 2 QB’s, WR starts with his back to the first QB he will catch from first, turn and attack the QB’s catches the ball then turns to attack the other QB, extending to catch and tuck the ball away each time Coaching Point: Find the flight of the football, extend arms to make the catch

CARIOCA CURL CATCHING Description: Coach throws the ball in front of receiver as he comes out of carioca. Receiver should face towards coach. Flip hips at coach and attack the ball Coaching Point: Stay balanced and in control of your body - get your face out of break - extend the arms and cushion on contact, finish the drill by securing the ball

CARIOCA COMEBACK CATCHING Description: Coach throws the ball in front of receiver as he comes out of carioca. Receiver should face coach, Flip away from coach and explode out of the break Coaching Point: Stay balanced and in control of your body - get your face out of break - extend the arms and cushion on contact, finish the drill by securing the ball

CARIOCA IN CATCHING Description: Coach throws the ball in front of receiver as he comes out of carioca. Receiver should face coach, Flip his hips at the coach, and explode out of break parallel to the coach Coaching Point: Stay balanced and in control of your body - get your face out of break - extend the arms and cushion on contact, finish the drill by securing the ball

CARIOCA OUT CATCHING Description: Coach throws the ball in front of receiver as he comes out of carioca. Receiver should face coach, Flip his hips away from coach, and explode out of break parallel but away from the coach Coaching Point: Stay balanced and in control of your body - get your face out of break - extend the arms and cushion on contact, finish the drill by securing the ball

CATCHING BOUNCE 45 Description: Coach throws ball at the ground forcing it to bounce up at the receiver in the chest area as receiver comes at a 45 degree angle at the coach. Coaching Point: Focus on front white stripe — extend the arms — cushion the ball on contact (lock it away). Variation: Straight ahead

PARTNER DISTRACT IN FRONT CATCHING PARTNER DISTRACT IN FRONT Description: 2 WR’s needed for drill, the WR catching the ball is aligned a yard in front of the other, as you start the drill the WR on defense will attempt to distract the WR catching the ball in some way, can use any type of catching pattern, High, Low, Behind, Over Shoulder Coaching Point: Focus on catching the ball with defenders in the area

PARTNER DISTRACT OVER SHOULDER CATCHING PARTNER DISTRACT OVER SHOULDER Description: 2 WR’s needed for drill, the WR catching the ball is aligned a yard in front of the other, as you start the drill the WR on defense will attempt to distract the WR catching the ball in some way, can use any type of catching pattern, High, Low, Behind, Over Shoulder Coaching Point: Focus on catching the ball with defenders in the area

GOALPOST PARTNER CATCHING Description: Drill starts with WR’s stacked behind each other, WR in front needs to allow the WR behind to get his around around him in order to catch the ball Coaching Point: Focus on getting thumbs together around the defender

2 CONE DRILL FOOT DRILLS Description: Drill is from sideline to midfield, place cones 10 yards apart, WR needs to circle cones while keeping great body position Coaching Point: Keep your feet moving with great body position

HITCH DRILL FOOT DRILLS Description: Simulate hitch route, once at the top of the hitch route, retrace your route back to the LOS Coaching Point: Keep proper body position at the top of the route Drop your hips to allow you to get out of the break

3 FEET SIDELINE FOOT DRILLS Description: Receiver runs into boundary carrying as much controlled speed as possible. Coach throws the ball to the boundary in front of the receiver. Coaching Point: Receiver must focus first on front stripe of ball Extend the arms (lock it away). Tap feet 3 times before going out of bounds Variation: 3 feet End zone

JET PROTECT FOOT DRILLS Description: 6 Players are set 1 yard apart forming a tunnel. Receiver works the top of the route, work to stay in bounds, Tuck your shoulder and work to get up field quickly and protect the ball as you go through the tunnel of WR’s Coaching Point: Receiver must focus on getting out of the break and working back to the QB, protecting the ball, getting up field as he works through the tunnel of WR’s trying to strip the ball away

FOOT FIRE 45 FOOT DRILLS Description: Position your cones 1 - 2 yards apart. Take as many steps as you can between cones A and B, B and C. C and D etc. Move your feet and arms as fast as you can, ("Under Control"). When you approach the next cone, make sure eyes are up. Put your foot "hard" in the ground to change direction. Rock your head and shoulders opposite to simulate the top of stem Coaching Point: Focus on balance, arm drive, and foot quickness.

FOOT FIRE 90 FOOT DRILLS Description: Position your cones 5 yards apart.

WEAVE/PLANT FOOT DRILLS Description: Set up cones 7-8 yards apart in 45-degree angles. Receiver drives on cone and makes a sharp break Coaching Point: Start slow. Keep shoulders square to the cone until the break. Cut off outside foot. All hard angle Break Point rules apply.

3 STEP WEAVE FOOT DRILLS Description: Every five yards receiver should emphasize hitting heavy with the route-side foot and coming to balance with the opposite foot. When the second foot hits the ground, receiver should throw his head and shoulders up field as he bows down. This gives the illusion to the defense that he is going on an 'up move. Coaching Point: Execute this drill very slowly. Over emphasize

FIGURE 8 FOOT DRILLS Description: Coach sets up four cones in a square. Receiver works Hard Angle cuts, both 90-degree angle and 45-degree angle. Work all four cones. Coaching Point: Check route side foot, body posture, and eyes.

TIGHT WEAVE FOOT DRILLS Description: Coach sets up cones 1-2 yards apart in 45-degree angles. Receiver drives on cone and makes a sharp break Coaching Point: Start slow. Keep shoulders square to the cone until the break. Cut off outside foot. All hard angle Break Point rules apply.

BREAK POINT It is crucial to win the battle in transition. As receivers go to change directions, they must be flawless. No hitches, false steps or indicators to key the defender that something different is happening. There are many break point negatives to guard against. The first is the eyes. A receiver should stare through the defender at the Break Point. Many young receivers drop their eyes to look at the Break Point. Keep your eyes and head up.

BREAK POINT The second problem arises when you reach or extend for the Break Point. This will lock your hips out and cause you to raise up. Ideally, you want to have your hips coiled (not locked) at all times. This will enable you to spring out of the cut. Take your feet and body all the way to the Break Point. Your toes should point up field. Numbers should be over the knees.

BREAK POINT The third negative indicator is the arms. You want to keep them close to the body in a natural running action. Do not accelerate them or extend them from your body.

BREAK POINT The final problem arises with too many steps approaching the Break Points. The fewer steps you can take, the quicker the transition will take place. Try to take a 2-step approach to get in and out. The route side foot should be the one that slows or breaks you down. Hit heavy with that foot to start the transition. The opposite foot will fall into place. Once your body comes under complete control you have reached the pivot phase. You will pivot on both feet simultaneously. Jump out of the cut. The spacing between your feet is critical. The distance is based on the width of your hips. This allows your hips to open naturally. When the pivot foot hits the ground, the head snaps to the target.

BREAK POINT HITCH ROUTE DRILLS Description: Set up a Break Point cone and an angle cone. Receiver should carry as much speed as possible to the Break Point cone, without losing control. Receiver should use good technique and come out exactly at the Angle cone. (Repeat other side). Expand to Synchronized when possible. Coaching Point: Check route side foot, body posture, and eyes. Make sure receiver snaps his face coming out of break. Slow down if he is not perfect. Change the Angle cone to get desired cuts. "Run" out of the break every time (This keeps the separation).

BREAK POINT OUT ROUTE DRILLS Description: Using the cones, set up a start cone and a transition cone. Have receiver build speed directly at the transition cone. As he closes, he should drop the route side shoulder, accelerate his arms, and level off parallel to line. Coaching Point: Receiver should not raise up. Snap your face out of the break. Expand to Synchronized when possible. Keep arms close to the body. Transition should take place in 2 yards

BREAK POINT VERT. ROUTE DRILLS Description: Using a start cone and a transition cone, have receiver build speed to the transition cone. As he gets as close as 3 yards, but no closer than 1 yard, have him take a step slightly outside the framework of his body. Have him come out at a very skinny angle up field. He should also use a head and shoulder fake opposite the break. Expand to Synchronized when possible. Coaching Point: Make sure the step is not too wide at the break or else the hips will become locked. The stem should be directly at the cone (defender). Accelerate out of the break (speed is the key). Turn your chin not the shoulder when looking for the ball.

WINDOW ROUTE DRILLS Description: Line 4 WR’s up in a straight line 5 yards apart, a single WR lines up 2-3 yards behind the line of WR’s on the coaches command, the WR runs behind the line of WR’s, the line of WR’s can move in any direction once the drill begins. Coaching Point: Stay on your course, focus on flight of the ball, expect the ball in the open window, as a variation, add a another WR going the opposite direction

LAM ROUTE DRILLS Description: Align 4 cones in a 5x5 square, start on the bottom left cone, how fast can you get around all 4 cones, making the catch after you clear the third cone Coaching Point: Drop your hips at each cone, keep your eyes up, turn near foot towards to cone to allow you to speed cut the drill

CHASE ROUTE DRILLS Description: Divide WR’s into 2 groups 5 yards a part, one line is WR’s the other are DB’s, align a cone 5 yards from the WR, run the top of a curl route, when the WR gets to the cone, the DB will chase the WR back to the QB Coaching Point: Keep working back to the QB, drop hips at the top of the route

CURL ROUTE DRILLS Description: Use 6 cones to set up back to back top of the route curl routes Coaching Point: Explode on the stem part of the route, work back to the QB while finding the flight of the ball

COMEBACK ROUTE DRILLS Description: Use 6 cones to set up back to back top of the route comeback routes Coaching Point: Explode on the stem part of the route, work back at 45 degree while finding the flight of the ball,

HOT POTATO STRENGTH DRILLS Description: 2 WR’s are 2 yards apart, they will toss ball back and forth to each other as quickly as possible Coaching Point: Catch with figure tips only

BALL FLIP STRENGTH DRILLS Description: Single WR drill, grip the tip of the ball, flip it to the top of your hand, then let it flip back down to your finger tips Coaching Point: Rest ball for a count on the top of your hand, then let it rotate back

BALL DROP STRENGTH DRILLS Description: Single WR drill, grip the ball on the laces, let the ball drop towards the ground, repeat with your other hand. Coaching Point: Catch ball as close to ground as possible

TUG A WAR STRENGTH DRILLS Description: 2 WR’s are facing each other, both will grip the football on opposite ends, one will say go, both will attempt to pull the ball away from the other, switch hands and repeat drill Coaching Point: Should only have fingers on the ball, not your palm

BLOCKING Tremendous technique coupled with great effort will allow you to become a great blocker. We must understand the dynamics of leverage and how they should be applied. The A-B-C-D's will teach you the proper progression of leverage and enable you to control your defender while blocking.

Alignment: Know the leverage of the defender(s) that you need to block Alignment: Know the leverage of the defender(s) that you need to block. Is he head up? Outside? or Inside? His alignment, along with the run play called, will determine your approach to the defender.

Bead: Your approach to the defender has two different phases: 1 Bead: Your approach to the defender has two different phases: 1.) Push/Breakdown 2.) Creep and Punch. 1.) Push/Breakdown - Come off the ball with good tempo (7/8 speed). Try to drive the defender deep. Be under control in case he does not back out quickly. As you breakdown 4 yards from defender, be able to move all three directions -Front, Right, or Left.. 2.) Creep - Slowly close the distance between you and the defender (like lion stalking his prey). Be under control.

Contact: Punch the defender with the heels of your hands in his breastplate. Fingers are spread wide. Eyes level at the top of his numbers. Keep your elbows inside. Use your hands as if they were the steering wheel on an automobile to turn and maneuver him (must be physical). Feet are spread shoulder width apart, knees are bent. Stay square as long as you can.

Drive: As your hands are the steering wheel, your legs are the motor Drive: As your hands are the steering wheel, your legs are the motor. We need to create movement. Drive him out by taking short 6-inch power steps. Keep an arc in your lower back, a wide base, and your butt out to produce power angles.

2 STEP PUNCH BLOCKING Description: WR is lined up a yard from a coach/player holding a hand shield, WR will take 2 steps after which he strikes the bag Coaching Point: Both feet need to be on the ground when you strike the bag Hit on the rise, thumbs up hitting with your palms

TOSS BLOCKING Description: Defender is lined up facing WR, while WR is blocking the defender, the defender has his hands on the WR’s shoulders, trying to toss him away, WR drives defender for 5 yards Coaching Point: Keep a solid base, keep feet moving, focus on hand placement and balance through the drill

PUNCH BLOCKING Description: WR place inside hand on the defender, they will travel down the line, the WR will punch with his outside hand as they move down the line. Coaching Point: Strike to control the defender from getting up field

CREEP BLOCKING Description: Defender is lined up 5-8 yards off the LOS, WR will explode off the ball, then gather himself as he creeps towards the defender, attack the defender once he commits to where he want to go, strike in the same manner as 2 step punch Coaching Point: Focus on balance throughout, do not react until the defender choose his course

MIRROR DODGE BLOCKING Description: Set up 2 cones 5 yards apart, WR and defender start in the middle, defender will move back and forth between the cones until whistle is blown, defender will attempt to cross into the space of the WR, WR’s job is to run him outside the cones Coaching Point: Focus on defenders midsection, drop your hips during the drill to give you great balance, keep hands up ready to strike defender

Punch, Pull, Slap BALL SECURITY Description: Defender lines up behind WR, WR goes down the line with either 1 or 2 football locked into position, defender tried to get the ball away from the WR by punching, pulling or slapping the ball Coaching Point: Cover point, forearm locks ball to body, keep elbow tucked

TOUCH BALL SECURITY Description: WR will touch the ground every 8-10 yards as he crossing across the field, at this point, the coach will attempt to slap, punch, and or rip the ball out Coaching Point: Cover point, forearm locks ball to body, keep elbow tucked

SPIN BALL SECURITY Description: WR will spin every 8-10 yards as he crossing across the field, at this point, the coach will attempt to slap, punch, and or rip the ball out Coaching Point: Cover point, forearm locks ball to body, keep elbow tucked
