AP WORLD HISTORY Curriculum – Designed as a survey course by the College Board, a not-for-profit educational company. Based around 5 historical themes and 6 chronological eras Emphasis on 9 historical thinking skills European history accounts for only 20% of the curriculum Covers period from around 8000BCE to the present day (10,000 years covered in 8 months)

AP World History Changes to the APWH exam – effective September 2016 55 multiple-choice questions 4 Short Answer Questions (SAQs) Choice of 2 Long Essay Questions (LEQs) One Document Based Question (DBQ)

College Credit The scores that are required to earn college credit vary per college/university UVA = score of 5 to get 3 credits James Madison = score of 5 to get 6 credits George Mason = score of 4 to get 3 credits, 5 to get 6 credits Mary Washington = score of 3 to get 3 credits Last year 89% of Broad Run’s students (156 out of 173) received a 3 or higher Last year 100% of students I tutored (33 students) received a 3 or higher National Average = 51%

WORK LOAD Reading almost every night from a college level textbook AP World History requires: Reading almost every night from a college level textbook Approximately 1 hour a night Approximately 2-3 hours per chapter Reading comprehension assessment for each reading assignment Taking at least 2 unit exams consisting of multiple-choice questions and at least 2 Short Answer Questions (SAQs) per quarter Writing at least 2 Long Essay Questions (LEQs) and/or Document Based Questions (DBQ) essays per quarter At least 1 major project per quarter and several minor ones

ASSESSMENT Unit tests (45 % of student’s grade) Essays/Writing Assessments (20% of student’s grade) Chapter Reading Assessments – Socratic Seminar, Quizzes, etc. (20% of student’s grade) Projects (15% of student’s grade)

EXPECTATIONS The student will complete all reading assignments The student will be ready to participate in class and will participate responsibly The student will advocate for him/herself The student will make up all assessments and missing work in a reasonable amount of time (1 week is the expectation)
